address book and yahoo sync

I have my iPhone address book set to sync with my yahoo account. Only issue I have now is that at times, which I cant define when, I get duplicate entries in my phone contacts.... Not in yahoo. Is there an easy way to delete the duplicates ( or sometimes 4x ea) or is it a manual delete of the each record?

If you turn off syncing in iTunes it should give you the option of removing
all the contacts then you can turn it back on and have it redownload/resync
with Yahoo...

MMe, iDisk & Doc2Go-Worth the money?

Posted by: "Jean French" jfrench55@rcn.com   jefrench55

I just started the trial of Mobile Me and like the idea of not having to be
wired to my computer to sync but I don't have Docs2Go Premium and I'm not
sure I want to upgrade if I'm not going to keep MMe.

I want to be able to edit documents and spreadsheets and have them sync but
the reviews of D2G Premium show a lot of problems. Is there anyone out
there who uses these successfully? Do I spend the money?

Thanks,

Jean

What is it that you want to do, edit documents on your iPhone or just keep
documents in sync between computers?

MMe's iDisk can sync between machines running OS X or Windows, but so will
Dropbox and it is free for up to 2GB (which is a lot of documents).

Google Docs is another option, I think you get 1GB standard storage for Docs
(in addition to 8GB in Mail and 1GB in Picasa) but you can buy an extra 20GB
of storage for $5 per year (much cheaper than MMe) and they sell up to
hundreds of TB storage and allows limited editing on mobile devices (with
more advanced features in beta now).

As far as Docs to Go, I have been using different versions of it since Palm
was the major smart phone market, I have the iPhone/iPad version as well as
the Android version - the Desktop Sync software is a pain but iTunes
supports syncing so of the files so you don't really need the desktop client
anymore and it does interact with MobileMe and Google Docs for storage.

This is a matter of individual preferences. I have an iPhone, not an iPad, and will clearly say that my browsing experience is sorely compromised by Apple's decision not to support Flash. Respectfully, Bill, I wouldn't so quickly dismiss it so glibly. Some people, indeed, don't care; perhaps eventually HTML5 will fulfill predictions that it will replace Flash. In the meantime this is simply not true, not yet. As to iPad vs other tablets, we'll just have to wait and see the other tablets. It's certainly not true of any product on earth, even Apple, that anyone going into a store and trying it out will result in a slam-dunk.

Best.
Bobbo

No, I love how people speculate - I can guarantee the majority of the
'reporters' (unless they are actually technologists, such as Becky Worley,
Andy Ihnatko, David Pogue, Walt Mossberg, etc) have no idea what "not having
Flash" means and even more to the point, I guarantee that if someone goes to
the store and uses an iPad vs another tablet, they will buy the iPad unless
the price is considerably lower (which I haven't seen).

And on the other hand, I have an iPad and an iPhone, and feel my browsing experience is enhanced by the absence of Flash.

The issue is not whether or not HTML5 can or will replace Flash, it is how quickly code-writers will utilize the tools that are IN HTML5.

"Sync Now" Function on iPhone and iPad?

Posted by: "Richard E Johnson, MD" RECMSOJ@OnlineOK.com   recmsoj

Other than (or in addition to?) having the appropriate Push notifications set to "On", is there a way to do a Manual "Sync Now" (of anything you have just input or edited n a Calendar, Contact, etc.) on iPhone or iPad? There is just such a button available on a MobileMe-synced Mac under System Preferences->MobileMe->Sync.
Thanks,
Dick

Dick, just opening the App (Calendar or Contacts) forces a resync.

If it is open already you can do a force quit of the app (double tap home,
tap and hold icon until it wiggles, x it out) then reopen.

For some reason the last couple of times I've synced my iPhone (3GS)
to iTunes (9.2.1) my pictures haven't made it to the computer. I haven't changed any settings so I'm stumped.

Ideas?

It is not an automatic sync, because not everyone uses iPhoto.

You have to manually sync or transfer them over.

Tethering

I am in more and more places where wifi is either secured or costs money. (looking to use my laptop)

I am taking a closer look at Tethering my ip4 to the laptop.

When I 'click' it on my ip. It says to call 611 or go to website

Website a little tough to navigate in ip so was wondering if anyone else is doing it

I am on $30 unlimited data.

Thx

If you move to tethering, you will HAVE to give up your unlimited data, move
to the $25 2GB data plan and pay another $20 ($45 total) to have the ability
to tether, sharing the 2GB total. I would look into a MiFi device unless
you use very little data.

It's easier if you go to the Apps Store and download AT&T MyWireless Mobile.

We have 3 iPhones in this household with varying usage of cellular data.
My wife never goes up to even near 200 MB/month.
Our housemate streams music at work and runs about 1.9 GB/month.
I run about 200-300 MB/month.

So tethering with AT&T would add $15/month for 2 GB max.

How much would buying and using a Mifi cost for 5 GB max?

Depends on carrier, you can get it as low as $25-$40 a month through Clear,
Virgin, or a couple other pre-paids that I can't remember the name, Verizon
& Sprint are $59.99 for 5GB or $39.99 for 250MB (Sprint has unlimited 4G
data in available cities).

There is one I posted about from Clear called the iSpot that is only for
Apple products and has unlimited data for $25 a month (4G) with 3G fall over
is $35 a month or they have one that works on all products for $35 a month
for 5GB.

I'm in the same position. I have unlimited on my iPhone and not giving it
up.

I bought a Samsung Captivate and an extra line just for tethering. It was
cheaper than committing to $60 a month for the air card and I got 2 GB with
an extra 1 GB for $10 any time I went over. I asked them at the AT&T store
if the Captivate would tether and they said it would. An AT&T rep just told
me that there is no modem support by AT&T for the Captivate. I don't want
to steal it and I don't want to void my warranty. The other option they
gave me was an air card, which is $60 per month for 5 GB, but there's a
two-year commitment unless I pay upfront for the air card (they said
probably around $200). I might do that, but I want to know for sure that's
going to work before I plunk down $200 for yet another device.

I hope it is within the return window for the Captivate, most Android phones
(including my Verizon Droid Incredible) allow tethering but require 2.1 and
root access and Samsung has neither currently. AT&T has a wireless device
that provides WiFi data just like the MiFi which if you pay for another line
($9.99), a Data Plan ($25) and Tethering option ($20) you would only end up
saving about $5 if you only use 2GB, if you use 5GB it would end up being
$30 more ($10 per GB over 2).

It might be a few years out (4G / LTE) but mobile data pricing has to catch
up with broadband, we would never pay mobile rates for the speed /
reliability and limits we pay for wireless. I pay $30 each for the two
phones I carry, which are likely capped at 5GB although I have never been
charged overages, so $60 total for say 10GB and the speed of DSL I had ~15
years ago and paid maybe $30/mo and never a cap. I know have FiOS and while
it is discounted in my 'bundle' on the bill it shows I pay $30 for 15x the
speed on either phone and transmit hundred of GB per month...

Unfortunately, it wasn't within the return window because I had a lot of
problems with the phone itself initially. After several calls to AT&T
support, they DOA'd the Samsung and gave me a new one just like it, but
after a couple of weeks, it was doing the same thing. I took it back, but
the initial 30 days was up. Since I have to have a dependable phone, I
upgraded my main line to an iPhone 4. I called Samsung to see if I could
get my money back on the Captivate under the warranty. A technical support
person there told me that it sounded like it was getting too hot and that I
shouldn't use a case with it. Sure enough, when I removed the clear, open
front case that I got for it at the AT&T store at the time of the phone
purchase, I have never received that error message again.

I wanted to try Android before the contract was up on my 3G. The Captivate
is a pretty phone with a beautiful screen, but no competition for the
iPhone. I might check into prepaid for my laptop and sell the Captivate.
Don't really want to commit to $60/month for an air card I'll only use part
of the time and can't use in some places. I agree the pricing is
ridiculous.

I have no idea. I have an earphone like cable that connects through a
wireless adapter that works. But as far as Ford Sync, don't know.

Has anyone else purchased or used an iSpot through Clear?

Evidently this is a (fairly) new 4G WiFi Hotspot device that is MAC address
locked to Apple devices (iPod, iPad, iPhone, I guess Macbooks, iMacs, etc) -
the device is $99 and service is UNLIMITED 4G service for $25 a month, you
can add 3G fall back for a extra but this is definitely tempting instead of
having data plans on iPhone, iPad, etc - they do have a ClearSpot for I
think $35 a month that works with other devices but it is interesting that
they chose to provide this for Apple devices...

http://www.clear.com/spot/ispot

This hotspot isn't from Apple or AT&T. It's from CLEAR and it's 4G. So iSpot
is fast to the core. Didn't think your iPad™, iPhone®, or iPod touch® could
get even better? Guess again, my friends, guess again.

iSpot™
4G Personal Hotspot
This hotspot isn't from Apple® or AT&T™
.
It's from CLEAR®.
iSpot is a 4G personal hotspot connecting up to eight of your favorite
Wi-Fi-enabled Apple mobile devices, giving you freedom to use
super fast mobile internet™ on the go, anywhere CLEAR has coverage.
Didn't think your iPad™, iPhone® or iPod touch® could get even better?
Guess again! See how great they get with iSpot. Your mind and devices
will be racing as fast as your 4G connection.

• iSpot Flies. 4.5 ounces of pure 4G speed, everywhere in CLEAR coverage,
even in a moving car.
• iSpot Plays. iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone! When you give them the freedom
to access the internet at 4G speeds, it opens up new worlds.
• iSpot Shares. Tell your friends, family members and colleagues to bring
it!
iSpot works with up to eight Wi-Fi-enabled Apple mobile devices at the
same time.
• Super Fast. Super Small. Do what you love, but faster with CLEAR
4G speed. Fits in your pocket with a rechargeable battery that gives
you hours of continuous use.
• Safe. Password-protected, so you control who uses it.
• Easy to Set Up and Use. Turn it on and go

I have Sprint's version, the Overdrive, but same device/service. I use it
with my WiFi iPad and my laptops when commuting or traveling. It works very
well, and better with the iPad since the last update a few months ago. Nice
to have 4G when possible, but connectivity through 3G when it's not around.

That's the same one I use and really like. It's been a real lifesaver especially in hotels with weak Wi-Fi.

I've used Clear at home for better than a year now, and added their ClearSpot when it became feasible for us to. We currently have my iPhone and 4 laptops running at my house and Christmas will add one more.

I haven't had any trouble at all since I made the switch. The hardest part is getting used to 3G again when I'm out and about. My phone is a networking and genealogy tool for me. I couldn't function without constant and instant access to my email, Internet, database, documents and schedule. That's the main reason I bought an iPhone to begin with, and it's the reason I went with a ClearSpot at home.

Is that what you wanted to hear?
