Instead of adding all kinds of adaptors, you could simply replace your car stereo completely with a new one that does all you need it to do. It took me a long to reach this very simple conclusion and I spent countless $$ on various adaptors, fm transmitters etc. I just bought a kenwood car stereo with HD radio that has an aux input socket and a USB input socket so I can charge my iPhone and control it through the car radio. Only cost me $180.00. I am very happy. Too bad it took me three iPhones to get to this point!

Agreed - my after market car radio has both auxiliary - for satellite - and iPod (unfortunately not iPhone, but it still works). You sure don't want to fool with FM modulators if you don't have to, because the FCC limits the deviation on the FM output, which translates directly to volume level compared to regular FM stations. It is very distracting when skip brings in a distant station at ten times the volume of your modulator.
I use Pioneer and not Kenwood, because the nearest station with the format I want is 140 miles away, and I can't fool around with anything but the very best car receiver made to pull that signal in reliably.

I agree with you on this. I am getting to this decision as well. I probably paid 100 for an online modulator and then it started having noise bleed in the signal when I would charge the iPhone too. Clearly it was a car grounding issue. But I would have to pay extra to fix that. So I chose to get a tape adapter and that works fine but it too makes noise that I can't stand hearing.
What I would like is a new stereo that allows transmitting the audio from my iPhone via Bluetooth to the stereo and not have to attach any wires other than for charging.
I will need to stop at Best Buy and see what my options are there.

And I am shocked Pioneer is better than Kenwood in receiver technology. I always bought Pioneer all my life because I could not afford Kenwood. Though the word was Kenwood was a better stereo.

I reached the same conclusion after going through so many FM transmitters. New Pioneer stereo has solved the problems.

One aspect of aftermarket radios is how integrated stock radios are to the rest of the car. My wife refuses to let me near the radio in her car - if I replace it with aftermarket, the steering wheel controls and rear seat DVD players won't work any more. So she is stuck with no auxiliary input, and no iPod / iPhone dock. That leaves car chargers and FM modulators the only options.
When Pioneer says "Supertuner", they darn well mean it. I've done up to 300 mile FM reception reliably, although signals that far away are subject to fading and all kinds of problems. "Better" is subjective, there are dozens of specs to compare. When you are out in the middle of nowhere, reception specs are all that matter. You don't want to fool around with "good", you need best. I am an RF engineer, I've been inside these radios, Pioneer does the job right, nobody else is even close. Anybody on Yahoo's 5000 member "fmtuners" group will tell you the same.
Pioneer actually helps if you are using an FM modulator - the new adaptive IF design they use erases adjacent channel interference, leaving more frequencies usable by your modulator.

I had a Pioneer put in a 96 Mercedes. The hands free BT for iPhone is wonderful. It also runs an old iPod and, in an auxiliary, an XM radio. That is in addition to the normal CD and AM/FM tuner. Couldn't be happier.

MobileMe -- free trial to paid subscription -- timing question
Posted by: "jparkerg@yahoo.com" jparkerg@yahoo.com jparkerg
Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:24 am (PDT)
I recently signed on for a MM free trial. I like it and will convert it to a paid family plan soon. After a bit of searching I finally found the buttons/links on the Apple/MM site to convert.
BUT, I'd like to use as much of the freebie as I can before converting over to the paid subscription. I recall reading on this group about someone who had his free trial automatically converted by Apple quite a bit ahead of the conclusion of the freebie.
I don't need to milk it out to the final day(s) of he 60 free trial, but I wouldn't mind saving a month or so on the other end of the subscription.
Do I just wait until the last week or so to do the conversion?
Or will they do it for me sooner than I'd like?
Just wondering....
TIA
John

I think the action of Apple charging earlier was on an automatic yearly upgrade and not on a free trial.
My guess is that the free trial will expire and you manually need to set up the continuation and payment with a credit card to continue the service.

For me, I believe they just sent email reminders and I did the upgrade when I wanted. You can set it to update automatically or not. Can't remember exactly where that is, because I don't use the web interface.

Re: Rocketfish Battery Case Question

I bought the Mophie Juice Pack Air before the Rocketfish model existed and overall I've been satisfied by it. After 10 months of use the Juice Pack still gives me about 50% more battery life.
It *does* hurt signal strength, but where I live I almost always have good signal. For those very few times when I don't have a good signal I have removed the case and the signal strength has improved a bar or two.

Problem is the iPhone runs off the battery case until its depleted and thinks its being charged so usage stats do not start until the Rocketfish pack gets to 0%. Anyone know of a program that tracks usage while on a auxiliary battery pack?

Data Lost During Sync

My employer has a 3G iPhone with the Splash ID application. Recently he
tried to sync the phone through iTunes, apparently with no success, and then
tried to sync the phone directly with Splash ID. In the process he lost all
of the data he'd stored on the phone using Splash ID. Is there some way he
can recover this data? Do we need to provide additional information to help
someone provide an answer? He uses an Acer netbook with Windows 7 Home, if
that helps. I'm not sure which version of iTunes he has, or which version of
Splash ID.
Thanks!

Hi Debbie - so sorry about his loss of SpashID data. I believe there is a folder in " my documents " named SpashID. In it there should be backups of the data if your boss has been syncing in the past. If he doesn't find it there you or he should contact the developer who is very responsive.

Verizon to offer simultaneous voice and data with VoRA for the iPhon
Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com boulware0224
Tue Oct 12, 2010 1:08 pm (PDT)
Sent to you via Google Reader
Verizon to offer simultaneous voice and data with VoRA for the iPhone?
Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile
One of the selling points for the iPhone has always been the ability to be talking on the phone and still surfing the web (or otherwise using data). The catch with that is Verizon does not currently allow for simultaneous voice and data. For some that will be a deal breaker and they would likely remain with AT&T. That said, according to Verizon executive Brian Higgins;
"I think there are fringe cases where something like that could be important," Mr. Higgins said. "For a vast majority of customers, I don't think it's a terribly important use case."
Personally, I would agree, however there are those rare times when it comes in really handy and I would also say that it is becoming more and more important for those using a smartphone given you can now do so much.
With that, this lack of simultaneous voice and data is not an issue exclusive to Verizon, but also Sprint as the cause is the CDMA network. The good news here is that it should be taken care of sometime early next year.
This bit is coming by way of said Brad Shewmake, spokesman for the CDMA Development Group, who stated that;
"A solution that will allow CDMA networks to carry voice and data simultaneously will become commercially available in the first half of next year,"
Of course, just because it will be available does not mean Verizon (or Sprint) will adopt it. Nonetheless, for the iPhone to be moving to Verizon, that sounds like something that would need to happen given Apple has run numerous commercials touting the simultaneous voice and data feature in the past.

Well I've owned my Mophie for the iPhone 4 now for 2 weeks .
It works well but I can not understand why when the phones battery is charged to 100% with the Mophie why it doesn't last as long as when
The phone is charged to 100% with power adapter .
It almost seems like it lasts just half as long.

I'm not following you, how does the phone last less with a battery on it
than without a battery on it? Unless you mean you are using the Mophie to
charge the phone. Technically, there are 3 ways to use it (or any battery
case).
1 (what I do) Start day with both fully charged, have Mophie turned on
(switch to screen) so that iPhone stays at 100% and has the plugged in/fully
charged logo and you are using Mophie power - this lasts me all day (I get
at least 12 hours if not longer) and my Mophie still has 1 or 2 lights and
iPhone never gets used - heavier use will use more power and the Mophie
might get used up and then you will start using iPhone's internal battery
(power plug icon will go away and 100% will go down as you use it.
2. (most instructions) - Mophie fully charged, iPhone at 100% or less and
you use your iPhone until you get to 20% or less then you switch Mophie on
and it charges iPhone back up and while it is charging the internal battery
you are also pulling power using the phone so even though it is 1500mAh it
might not last as long since it is powering the phone and charging the
battery
3 (combination) - leave the Mophie turned off when phone is locked/asleep so
it is not being used and when you use phone turn Mophie on so that you keep
internal battery charged and draw power from Mophie for use.
or I guess a 4th, which is to use the phone until it is completely dead then
put (or turn) the Mophie On and it acts like it is being plugged in.

If I charge my phone with the Mophie my phone won't last as long as it does if I charge it with a power cord ..

I've got the Altec Lansing BackBeat 903, bluetooth stereo, sounds
pretty good on music, fairly comfortable once adjusted, has plenty of
controls, even does calls although the wife says its hard to hear me. I
like it because I can listen to music/podcasts all day.

Signal boosters / Repeater ?
Posted by: "N1JMM1_GMAIL" n1jmm1@gmail.com n1jmm

Has anybody experimented with using a signal booster / repeater /
bi-amp / directional antenna(s) for the iPhone 4 on AT&T.
Doesn't matter if the phone is in the carry case, pocket, or how I hold
it, most of the time it reports NO SERVICE, occasionally it will get
enough service to ring but can't conduct a call until I go outside and
find a sweet spot.
While their online coverage maps claim to have average signal strength
at my work place, the iphone 4 reports "NO SERVICE". Several other AT&T
users have the same/simular results, having to go outside and search for
the signal to use the phone. Verison & Sprint also claim decent coverage
there but it isn't true either. The only thing that works there is
Nextel because we have a Nextel site on the property, oh it would be
nice to have the iphone on Nextel.
I doubt AT&T will resolve the coverage any time soon so I'm looking for
alternative solutions.
Thanks
