Devices in Windows iTunes

Hi,
I'm helping a friend set up her iPod and iPhone on her Windows iTunes. I'm not a Windows power user at all, but I do know how to use it, though I never do anymore. The problem seems to be that when she plugs in her iPod or iPhone, they don't come up in a device list in iTunes.
Anyone have any suggestions for things to try?
Thanks,
Martin

That will periodically happen to me. The only way I can get my iphone
recognized is to reboot the computer.

Making a video loop

I have an application I'm looking for, but have not yet found.
I have a powered dash mount for my iPhone. It is simple to turn the camera on so it is looking forward at the road and traffic.
But:
1. Left to itself, it shuts off automatically after a couple of minutes.
2. I don't want to continuously record video for the whole time I'm driving.
I would like to find an App that can be set to record only the last xxx period of video - user-definable to 30 seconds, or 60 second, or 5 minutes, or whatever - until I tell it to stop.
So then it would be recording continually, once started, but only the last 60 seconds, say, of recording is saved.
Has anyone ever heard of such an App?

Aftermarket iPod adapter plug (my iPhone's iPod) ...unsightly? expe

The stereo in my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe came with XM radio ability, which
I have. I was considering buying an aftermarket adapter so I can plug
in my iPhone's iPod to play my iPod through my car stereo's
speakers. I have not been able to find a wireless FM adapter that works
well/doesn't have a buzz/comes in clearly.
Also, charging the phone while playing the iPod would be nice too.
(1) Do these aftermarket adapters actually work?
(2) Are they difficult to install, or is there an unsightly box
hanging out from your dash?
(3) About how much do they cost and where do I buy one?
Thanks for all your ideas in advance!

I just bought this and am going to have it installed at best buy. It has either an iPod/iPhone connector that charges or an auxiliary plug. I'm going with the aux plug so my son can also connect his HTC aria. It ended up being around $180 but that includes installation and all extra connectors they needed for my car. (dodge caliber)

Think about separating the charging and modulation functions. Then it gets really easy - you get a car charger for the iPhone and a modulator that plugs in the top. You won't be able to use your phone, but you shouldn't while driving anyway - it isn't safe. Put it in aircraft mode so your music won't get interrupted.
There has been a big stink about RF modulators by some NPR radio stations, mainly because until recently, they only were able to tune the bottom four frequencies of the band. Belkin now makes models that can tune every frequency, and Radio-locator.com has a function to find unused frequencies in your area. That should solve the buzz. I've installed narrow ceramic filters in my car radio, which not only solves adjacent station problems, but makes the car radio into a super station seeker. That is far beyond the capabilities of most people, though.
My Belkin will override most rim shot signals in towns where I can't find a real blank frequency. The darn thing won't tune 87.9, which would be great because there are only three stations on that frequency in the country. Its shutdown circuitry isn't really effective, so in a month or so the batteries are shot - I usually just remove them between uses. Other than those limitations, I love the Belkin modulator. It is great!
A couple of warnings if you stream:
(1) You can't use airplane mode, so an incoming call will interrupt your stream. You are done streaming - find a parking lot and reset everything.
(2) If you use the iPod dock in most cars, etc, it will default back to iPod mode. The only workarounds are to use the RF modulator instead of the docking cable, never put anything into the iPod, or let the iPod start up, then stop it so the streaming audio will come through. Bottom line - I just never use the iPod dock because I don't want to fiddle with the iPod being the default.

Go to pac-audio.com and check out their product. They took over the Peripheral brand which is what I installed in my pickup.
Pull your stereo out. Plug and adapter into the factory wiring, plug in their add-on in and bury it in the dash, run the cable out for the iPhone or iPod, slide your stereo back on and your basically done. Sound is good. Cost over $100 and under $200 depending on your model of car. (Make sure the model you chose will charge your model of iPod or iPhone. I had to change the cable out when I upgraded from an iPod Classic to an iPhone.)
FM adapters (draw wind), especially if the channels are crowded in your area.

Do you have a USB input? Or an AUX line-in? If you have a USB input,
you may be able to just plug the iPhone in and go.
If you have an AUX line-in, several makers make iPod/iPhone kits that
charge and play iPods/iPhones. One end plugs into the dock connector,
one end plugs into the line-in, and the third end plugs into the power
socket. Mine is from Monster and the power plug also has
play/pause/FF/Rev control buttons. I believe that Belkin and Griffen
also make them and I wouldn't be surprised if DLO does too. I got
mine at Best Buy.
> Also, charging the phone while playing the iPod would be nice too.
> (1) Do these aftermarket adapters actually work?
Yes, but the FM modulators are only as good as your specific local
area. I used to use one, it worked just fine on one general area, but
lousy in another. It all depends on what else in range is
broadcasting on or near those same frequencies. And how good the
modulator itself is.

Define "unsightly" in context.

Cheap to moderate, and you can find them at Best Buy, the Apple Store,
etc.
If you want to go all-out, I found this for you (other reviews say it
works for your model year too):

Apple Will Take A Pass On 4G Networks For The iPhone In 2011—

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Apple Will Take A Pass
On 4G Networks For The iPhone In 2011— Sorry Verizon and AT&T via
TechCrunch by Steve Cheney on 10/11/10
Back in August I broke the news that Apple was lining up a component
purchase of several million chipsets from Qualcomm for a CDMA-powered
Verizon iPhone due in January. Last week, over two months later, the
Wall Street Journal confirmed this story.
Now that folks are finally celebrating the iPhone's imminent arrival to
Verizon, speculation has shifted to whether the January model will take
advantage of Verizon's "4G" network. 4G (not to be confused with iPhone
4) refers to the fourth generation of cellular standards, and both
Verizon and AT&T have publicly released launch plans for 4G networks
based on LTE in 2011.
This impending shift from 3G to 4G presents a major inflection point in
the reign of the iPhone franchise. Does Apple move to 4G right away, or
do they wait for the network to mature? Recall that Apple waited to
support 3G for one entire cycle, opting to release the original iPhone
on AT&T's mature 2.5G EDGE network, despite wide availability of 3G by
early 2007.
That situation mirrors what is happening now with LTE in 2011, and as
these questions become front and center, I have some very interesting
news to share about Apple's plans.
First things first — the iPhone CDMA model due in January won't support
LTE. But here's where it gets really interesting: sources tell me that
the iPhone refresh in mid-2011 won't support LTE either. Instead, Apple
will produce a dual mode iPhone containing 3G flavors of GSM and CDMA,
which operates on all carriers worldwide. If this holds true, Apple
won't support the LTE standard until some time in 2012.
A lot of you aren't going to be very happy with this news, since
4G-enabled Android phones already exist on Sprint's WiMAX network, and
dual-mode LTE-enabled Android phones will start to emerge for use on
Verizon's new network in the first half of next year.
But as we cut through the hype on LTE, I believe Apple's decision to
wait may be the right one. While the carriers are promising LTE as an
upgrade path that will drive new applications and higher speeds, the
reality is that 4G deployments will take much longer than the carriers
are letting on.
Apple doesn't want to mess with the first generation of LTE chipsets,
since they will be bulky and power hungry. Instead, Apple will make a
unified model that works across 3G networks on all carriers, and
innovate with incredible new features like NFC which mirror what they
accomplished with FaceTime on iPhone 4.
Apple simply doesn't want to be the guinea pig on new LTE networks that
aren't ready for primetime, and Steve Jobs knows not to trust the hype
that's spewed by the carriers on 4G. The truth is that 3G networks have
many more years of life, and the transition to LTE will be much slower
than the carriers want you to believe (LTE doesn't even have its voice
standard fleshed out yet).
This is why AT&T is upgrading modem cards in its basestations to
support the newest flavor of 3G called HSPA+, and it's why Verizon is
rumored to be working hard on Voice over Revision A, which will allow
simultaneous data and voice. These upgrades greatly extend the life of
3G networks, and hedge against the transition to LTE. And Apple is
pushing the carriers to extend 3G.
So if you're waiting for an iPhone that works on 4G carrier networks,
it's probably going to be a while. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more
about this story as the months unfold, especially as next summer's
iPhone approaches the "engineering verification test" stage. But based
on my knowledge of both the supply chain and networking infrastructure,
I feel pretty confident this is the way it's going to play out.

Bummer. Just down the road from me Verizon is putting up a new LTE tower
and I was hoping the Verizon iPhone would support it.

It will be interesting to see if Apple can actually get CDMA to work properly. I've had my stint with Verizon, and based on coverage, voice quality, and call drop rates - I'll NEVER go back! ATT absolutely rocks by comparison. When you absolutely positively have to have your phone working, there is no comparison. ATT wins over the rest.

We must live in two different worlds. In New Mexico. Verizon is king.
Cell signal virtually everywhere. Verizon "3G" pretty much everywhere.
AT&T, pretty much by the time you leave Albuquerque city limits,
you're lucky to have barely functional Edge network for data and
you're in dropped and failed call wonderland.
The only reason I'll be staying with AT&T when Verizon gets the iPhone
is because of my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I average about
5GB a month data usage.

I couldn't imagine not having simultaneous voice and data.

I rarely notice it on my Verizon (Droid) Incredible, it is kind of
misleading - the current CDMA 3G standard does not allow for simultaneous
voice & data - you can have data over WiFi while using CDMA for voice, or if
you are using Skype over the data connection you can still use data as well
- it isn't like if you are on the phone you can't use any other features not
to mention that your contacts, calendars, notes, already downloaded mail,
etc is already on the phone so unless you are somewhere with no wifi, aren't
using VoIP, are on the phone and try and pull up a web page that isn't
cached you don't even notice.

That is entirely location-dependent. Six years ago, I dumped Verizon
in favor of AT&T (was Cingular then) when it became obvious that
Verizon was never going to put in a tower to address a dead spot right
where I had recently moved to. And I loved the switch. Nary a
problem, coverage was as good as or better than what I had with
Verizon everywhere I went.
Almost four years ago, I moved to another state, and coverage was
still excellent, it was actually one of the considerations I had when
deciding where to look. Two years ago, coverage started to degrade.
I stuck it out for amost an entire year, complaining to AT&T on
average about every other month, getting different versions of the
same answer every time, a tower was out of service and would be fixed
within the month. The problem was never fixed, and in fact got worse.
Service was so good when I moved in, that I had decided I didn't need
two phone lines, and dropped the landline leaving my cellphone (iPhone
3G by then) as my only phone. By November of last year, coverage had
gotten so bad I could not reliably make or receive phone calls when
and where I needed to most, in and around my home. This includes the
ability to call 911! Meanwhile, I noticed no problems using data at
any time anywhere.
I depend on my cellphone to be able to make or receive calls. By last
November, I had been out of work for three months and I NEEDED to be
able to receive calls for job opportunities, as well as being able to
call family and friends. So I dumped AT&T in favor of returning to
Verizon.
I miss the iPhone. I do NOT miss AT&T.

I've heard rumors that starting this January, Verizon is going to
start dropping 3G handsets from their lineup in favor of 4G-capable
units only, in order to push the transition to LTE.

Hmmm. Seems like your charger is working like a dock, only it isn't that's why you get no sound...
Mine is different. I get some static scratchy sound when it's plugged to my car charger and I use an auxiliary jack.

Subject: [apple-iphone] Generic Chargers...
Greetings, group!
A few weeks ago I purchased (for $9.99) a generic iPhone car charger at TJ Maxx. The thing works well for charging... but it has an issue.
When my phone is charging in the car, there is no sound. If I watch youtube - no sound. Netflix - no sound. Recorded videos - you get the idea. Even simply sliding to unlock doesn't give me the "click" noise.
When the phone gets plugged in, I get a pop-up message saying something about "this accessory does not match with the iPhone system." Obviously that's probably answered my question why the sound goes out, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar off-brand charger and experienced this as well. And, of course, what did you do to remedy it?
Thanks!

Stop iTunes from opening the Store when I hit the "Home Page" button
Posted by: "Jeffrey Kaplan" yahoo@gordol.org gordoljk
Tue Oct 12, 2010 3:02 am (PDT)
Is there any way from stopping iTunes from hijacking the "Home page"
button on my keyboard while iTunes has the system focus?
I use iTunes either fully minimized or with the Mini Player. If I
leave it with the system focus, and then hit the "home page" button on
my keyboard, iTunes restores up and opens the iTunes Store. I never
want it to do that, I want the "home page" button on my keyboard to
open my web browser's Home Page.
I've already turned off keyboard navigation in iTunes.
