Presuming you already have the correct (latest) version of iTunes, my advice would be - once you have started upgrading the iOS - don't interrupt the process by shutting down or rebooting until the process finishes.

On my iPhone 4, once the iOS download finished, the upgrade process took around 15 minutes.

If you almost never connect to iTunes and backup, your process is likely to take longer - possibly a LOT longer.

It sounds like you never completed the upgrade. You have to let the firmware install and then you should see the home screen. It took me about 10 minutes. It will depend on how fast a connection you have when downloading.

Yes you do need to reformat the movie and I have done this successfully with Cucusoft iPhone video converter as well Handbrake. Both programs work well and have instructions for the procedure. I found Cucusoft even easier.

I updated iTunes, updated my son's 3G to 4.2 and did exactly what was stated
below and Find My iPhone doesn't work on my son's 3G.
A message comes up when you set up your device and click next - "This device is
not compatible with the free Mobileme's Find My iPhone"
Just curious if there was another step that I missed?

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: How To: Use Find My
iPhone / iPad Service via iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into your
MyPhone by Jacob Lopez on 11/22/10

Find My iPhone is probably one of the most necessary Apps an iPhone,
iPad or iPod Touch owner can download. That's because it will help you
track a lost or stolen device. At worst, you can lock or completely
wipe the device so that any sensitive information doesn't make it into
the hands of someone else.

Note: Apple's press release made it seem that the service would only
work on current devices (iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 4G). However, we
were able to get it working perfectly on an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.

Update: Seems that the reason we were able to update the 3G with
MobileMe has been discovered by some users, and just happened by chance
on our part.

1) Download Find My iPhone from the App Store on a current-gen iOS
device and register.

2) Setup your device by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars >
Add Account > MobileMe

3) Enter your Apple ID and password.

4) Turn on "Find My ..." in the next popup.

5) Now you can launch the App on your current-gen device, and you are
ready to go.

6) Now repeat the previous five steps on your older iOS device.

7) Go to Me.com and check that your devices are working.

It's also being reported that you can use someone else's iOS device to
setup your account, then just delete your account from the borrowed
device. However, it's also noted that you can only create 3 MobileMe
accounts per device, even if you delete the account.

Read on for a more detailed walkthrough of the same process with
pictures.

1) First, you will have to be running iOS 4.2. You can get it by
plugging your device into iTunes, backing up and hitting the update
button. iTunes will do the rest for you.

2) Go to your Settings, and choose "Mail, Contacts, Calendars."

3) Tap "Add Account"

4) Choose "MobileMe"

5) Enter your Apple ID and your password.

6) You will see the following screen:

7) Go to Me.com and login with your Apple ID. From there, you can check
out the location of your device. Know that you will have to set it up
for each of your iOS devices, but the process is the same across the
board. You can also download the Find my iPhone app from the App Store,
and that will make it possible to track your device from another iOS
device.

Things you can do from here:
- Subscribe to iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into your MyPhone using
Google Reader
- Get started using Google Reader to easily keep up with all your
favorite sites

It will work on a 3G (I have it working on my daughter's) but you have
to set it up under a mobile me account that was created on an i4.

How does one log into .me email account on Safari? I can do it from a computer, of course, but now with iPhone I get a page wanting to install "find my phone." Copying URL for log in on computer and emailing to iPhone doesn't work.

You have to use the "Find My iPhone" app to get it to work on the iPhone.

If you have a paid MobileMe account, you cannot log into it using Safari on the iPhone (you never have been able to).

You access your mail using Mail
You access your contacts using Contacts
You access your calendar using Calendar
You access your iDisk using the iDisk App
You access your gallery using the Gallery App
You access Find My iPhone using the Find My iPhone App

Ok. I had find my phone set up years ago. But I downloaded and installed find my phone on iPhone. Still no way to get to my .me account or to my email that I can see.

Re: Contacts - Finding Them

Ok, I admit I have some spare time. But this has always bugged me about the iPhone>Contacts app. I have over 2,000 contacts and it is a pain to scroll through them to find one. The search function is great but it is above the first contact and difficult for me to get to without opening a contact by mistake. I wish there were a setting that the search field were always at the top regardless of where you are in the list. Anyone have the same gripe or, better, a solution?

While 3Gs users might not have received 17 new text tones, we now have the
ability to choose a tone per contact from one of the original tones. This is at
least a step in the right direction...

Oh, there is a difference after all... the iPod app now sometimes
brightens the display when changing songs while plugged into the
charge&play car adapter. This is highly distracting at night, and 4.1
and older did not do that.

Does't Apple still have that special FaceTime number you can call to try it out?

Thanks for the responses everyone!

I totally agree, I'm not a fan of giving out my number for every one to see....
I did some research and found a site that claims to connect facetime users
safely called "facetimebff". Funny name right? Anyway it seems legit so I
signed up and made a profile, looks like they have a decent amount of users so
far, me thinks they must be pretty new. So if you guys wanna join and contact
me through there then we can test out facetime!

heres my profile: http://www.facetimebff.com/profileid47.aspx

Look forward to facetiming it up with some fanboys!

To do Facetime with a stranger would require that you give them your phone
number. Do you really want to do that. It does not sound safe to me.

Problem using paid version of find my phone

Posted by: "bladessf@aol.com" bladessf@aol.com   bladessf2000

Hi all - I mistakenly installed find my phone app on my 3GS. Couldn't get
it to work. I have deleted it. However I have a paid mobile me
subscription . I used to be able to locate my phone from my computer. However ever
since the new app came out I can log into my mobile me account but when it
asks for me to reenter my password it says it is incorrect. I have tried
multiple times for 3 days thinking all the upgrading etc just put a stress
on the mobile me server, but now I not so sure. I manually typed in the
password and tried cut and paste incase I may have been spazzing out.

Is there a alternate way to locate my phone from a laptop or computer? I
do have find my phone in settings on the phone enabled. I tried using my
itunes password no luck.

Any help appreciated
Sue

Dear Bill - Have tried that as well ;-(. Another poster notes that many
are having my problem. I tried the @mac.com login but I get to my account
but again the reenter password doesn't get accepted.

As the poster suggested - wait til apple figures out what is wrong at their
servers.

I just wanted to be sure it wasn't something I was absentmindedly
forgetting.

I would remove the account completely and readd if you still can't get in,
contact MMe support - I had problems on first day but once I tried twice,
used full account address with @me.com and it worked fine...

iOS 4.2 bugs: Having problems with MobileMe password?

Posted by: "Brent" flapdoodle@gmail.com   flapdoodle44

Sent to you by Brent via Google Reader: iOS 4.2 bugs: Having problems
with MobileMe password? via TiPb - The #1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
blog by Georgia on 11/24/10

Having problems with your MobileMe password lately? We're hearing from
users (and our own Rene!) that MobileMe both on the web at me.com and
on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad complains your password is wrong when
it's the same password you've always used. We'll take a look at the
symptoms and possible solutions after the break!

So MobileMe suddenly starts rejecting your password and you're sure
you're typing it in correctly? Here are some things to try:

On me.com, simply entering the password a second time seems to work for
some while on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, even though there's a
warning, email, calendars, etc. seem to keep syncing without a problem.
In other words it is annoying but you can muscle through.

For others, me.com stops working entirely but switching back to the old
mac.com version (user@mac.com instead of user@me.com) works fine. Then
when Apple fixes it on their end you can switch back.

While this is not technically an iOS 4.2 bug it did seem to start
happening right around the time Apple released iOS 4.2. Perhaps the
transition from pure me.com service to also supporting Apple ID's for
the now free Find my iPhone feature caused some server side hiccups?

Meanwhile you can also always try the old stand by of deleting the
account from your device and then adding it back again. It's a pain but
maybe less so than the repeated error popups.

If you're experiencing the MobileMe password bug and if these fixes or
any others helped you out, let us know in the comments!
