To do Facetime with a stranger would require that you give them your phone
number. Do you really want to do that. It does not sound safe to me.

Actually since Facetime launched on the iPod Touch and the beta for Macs/OS
X you can use e-mail addresses (Apple / iTunes ID) or a phone #.

http://www.apple.com/mac/facetime/

In fact if you have a mac and an iPhone 4 (or iPod Touch 4) or an iPhone 4
and an iPod Touch 4 you can "FaceTime" yourself to test and play with it...

Call Apple to test out Facetime. They created a number just for people like you that want to test it out with complete strangers.

The number is (888) 322-3846

It's a limitation of Exchange which is how you're most likely synching
google contacts now. It's a well known limitation and you can't use
custom labels. I went through and created a boatload of custom labels
in Goigle contacts only to find the phone numbers disappeared at next
sync. Had to go back and put them as work and pager numbers again.

You've waited a long while for this day to come, but here it finally
is. Apple is today rolling out iOS 4.2 to iPads and qualifying iPhones
(3G, 3GS and 4) and iPod touches (second, third and fourth generation)
across the globe, delivering the long-awaited multitasking and app
folder enhancements to a tablet that was already supposed to be magical
and revolutionary. To see whether this new update -- replete with Game
Center, AirPlay and AirPrint additions -- really helps the iPad step up
to doubleplusgood territory, check out our full review; everyone else,

Apple's Find My iPhone / iPad service now free, doesn't require Mobi

We'd been sort of hoping Apple would just make MobileMe a completely
free service, but it looks like we're taking baby steps instead: Find
My iPhone / iPad is now free for iPhone 4, the iPad, and the fourth-gen
iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1. As with the paid feature, you'll be able
to locate your device on a map, lock it, display a message, play a
sound, or remotely wipe your data from any browser or the updated iOS
app, which should presumably go live sometime today along with iOS
4.2.1 itself. Like we said, it's a baby step, but hey -- we never say
no to free.

The official versions aren't out yet, I checked before I left, you need 4.2.1 (and iTunes 10.1 to install 4.2.1). Should be out by 5p EST.

No; when available (later today?) you will be able to login to MobileMe with your regular MobileMe login, if you have one, or with your Apple ID (the same one iTunes uses).

And the Apple ID login will only let you do the Find My iWhatsis functions of MobileMe.

iOS 4.2 Available Today at 1PM EST

Apple has dropped the official announcement; iOS 4.2 will be available today (1PM EST). This announcement comes straight from Cupertino via press release. A bit of an unexpected turn given that they are typically just uploaded to Apple servers and news spreads by word of mouth.

It's expected to hit at 10am EST, at the earliest or 1pm EST at the latest (which is Apple's typical update time for iOS releases).

Either way, we will keep you updated on anything else that happens.

Here's some more info on iOS 4.2 that we've posted in the past:

Have her connect it to her computer, after connecting it press both power and home button at the same time, wait 15 seconds and release only the power button "top one" wait another 20 seconds and her phone should go into recovery mode, flash white screen and the itunes will ask if she wants to sync phone. Hit yes and recover, this should work if not her phone is dead, sorry.

Services From Apple Are Now Free via iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into
your MyPhone by Jacob Lopez on 11/22/10

Find my iPhone / Find my iPad service from Apple is now available free
for devices running iOS 4.2.1. The feature will show your your iOS
device on a map as well as let you control it remotely by locking it,
displaying messages or even remotely wiping all data from your device.
It's much like the HTCSense.com service HTC announced a few months back
during their event in London.

It's more than worth taking a look at, especially since this can be the
difference between the frustration of a lost iPhone / iPad with
personal information or having your device back in your hands, unharmed.

According to Apple via press release:

The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use
without a MobileMe℠ subscription and helps you locate your missing
device.* The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store℠
and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it
display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe
data from a lost device to protect privacy.

(*The free Find My iPhone feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or
new iPod touch (4th generation).

We will post a link with a how to when the update goes live. It's
definitely worth getting. Now, if only MobileMe will go free soon. For
now, we wait for iOS 4.2 which releases today.
