I am in the panhandle of FL and we are on central time. When I set my phone to set time automatically it is an hour later (EST) than when I set the time zone as Chicago. How do I fix this?

Do you have DST in Florida, and is it enabled?

Is it true that nobody can unlock Iphone running on 4.1 ???
If so, how can I install an earlier version, 4.0 for example so I can have the phone unlock ? Or what else can be done to get it unlocked ???

I got this 3 gs with intention to send it to a relative in Southeast Asia where there is no AT$T service. It runs on OS 4.1 !!
Everywhere I go, people tell me that "It can't be unlocked !!"
I don;t know what to do with this phone ! It is a very new, very nice white phone and I don;t want to resale it.
What would you advise ?? Thank you.

GPS application in I phone 4

Posted by: "meetheen" meetheen@gmail.com   meetheen

Sun Nov 7, 2010 4:11 am (PST)

I am a fresh user of I phone 4 from the middle east, without the support from any smart phone service providers like AT&T hence I am not able to use the maps feature outside home and office.

Also I find the service is not recommendable compared to the GPS services provided mobile phones like nokia.

Is there anyway to install the applications like Route 66 in my I phone 4?

Thanks in advance

It sounds like you are using the WiFi Assisted GPS - do you have Location
Services turned on in settings and it is an iPhone 4 and not an iPod Touch
correct? The GPS satellites should work wherever you are at...

"Windows shorcut" equivalents?

Posted by: "Book_of_Hezekiah" book_of_hezekiah_10_26@yahoo.com   book_of_hezekiah_10_26

Sun Nov 7, 2010 3:54 pm (PST)

I switch back & forth from 3G fairly commonly. Is there a way to install what in Windows would be called a shortcut? This is a bit cumbersome:
Settings/General/Network/Enable 3G

After reading the tip about Airplane Mode saving power, I might want to do similar for that toggle. To clarify, it would prevent receiving (or transmitting) of calls, meaning it's a way to silence my ringer for phone or messages. Correct? (Obviously v/m & text messages will be retrieved upon exiting Airplane Mode.)

Speaking of shortcuts, can I create or delete folder-groups for my apps? For instance, I need no Financial apps. I could kill that folder.

Shortcuts are for Widows computers. On an Apple computer, it would be called an Alias. On an iPhone, it would be called non-existent.

For your second question, try silent-mode, and receive the voice, text and email, with no sound. Vibrate optional.

You can delete all folder-groups and apps, EXCEPT the Apple installed ones. Sorry, Stock can not be deleted.

No. No shortcut...

If you are not on unlimited data plan, which I presume you are due to the need to switch on/off the Enable 3G often, just press the home button after switching it off.
Then when you want to switch it on again, bring up the multitasking dock by double clicking the home button and tap Settings from there. The switch page should show up...

Also, I think it's the Cellular Data that you need to switch on/off.

I didn't know they had white. I have a white iPhone but a black Otter Box. So there's only a teensy bit of the iPhone color that shows, from the back side only.

I like the screen protector--it's like glass with no bubbles or anything.

Downsides:
* The case is great protection but since the shell is kind of tacky, it doesn't slip in and out of my pockets easily, and I'm not a belt-carrier.
* The power-off/on button is really hard to switch. The cutout is enough for a great VIEW of the switch, but you have to actually stick a finger in and get fingertip grip, to move it.
* Sometimes it's damn near impossible to type the numbers on the periphery of the screen, on account of the screen frame.
* I've gotten used to it, but the weight of carrying the phone is increased greatly.

I love my white otterbox. I really like the white color. Hubby got the black and he really likes his too. He said if someone showed him a naked phone and one in the otterbox case, and told him the difference was $50.00, he wouldnt even bat an eye.

He also loves the feel of it. Guess we are all different which is good. Another me would be scary!!

Basics of synching

Sun Nov 7, 2010 3:55 pm (PST)

I have a 3G. New to smartphones & iPhone is my first. I don't understand synching.

I suppose my stories below amount to these questions.
How to limit & control synching?
How to back up my data regularly?
But I hope you read for context. I've had 2 bad experiences.

First, it sucked up all my contact information from various Yahoo accounts and added them into my phone list. So there are parties I've corresponded with for a couple days, 4 years ago, now "living" in my list. (Can I get a PC view of these names & edit them?) So I don't want things synching without my explicit permission--which I suppose I may have given at the time, without understanding.

Second, a couple weeks ago I had quite a scare when, after doing an iTunes update, my phone went blank & there was something about a restart being required and that I might have lost ALL my data. After frantic tech contacts where no one gave me hope of retrieving my data (how the hell that is possible I don't know), I went through with the Restart or renew and yes, all (or most) of my data was in fact backed up and restored. I resent having this scare and not being told it could happen.

I would like to save SOME music and SOME photos from my PC to the phone. I'd also like to "transfer" SOME photos from the phone to my PC. I have no idea how to do these things.

Thanks!

Most of the sections of the syncing can be controlled, turned on and off in iTunes. Look around in iTunes settings after you connect the iPhone to your PC.

Not everything is sync'd in iTunes.

I am a Mac guy, not a PC guy, so others will have to make suggestions about syncing or downloading photos to and from the iPhone. Photos are not sync'd by iTunes. You have to use something else to do that.

Make a fresh back up anytime you update any software, iPhone, PC or Mac, period, just in case something happens.

Calendar question

Posted by: "JeanW" jawillia11@yahoo.com   jawillia11

Mon Nov 8, 2010 3:15 am (PST)

On my iPhone 4, it has my Mobile Me calendar, my Yahoo calendar, my Gmail calendar, and those are all fine.
But then it has a calendar under the category "Other" called Birthdays, and for whatever reason it has listings for some of my contacts that are NOT their birthdays, and those entries do not get an Edit button on the iPhone.
I've gone to settings under calendar, and I don't even know where that one comes from. I've dropped and re-added every account that says it has a calendar, and that one persists. Where does it come from, and how can I get rid of - or at least fix - it? I have it unchecked, and the dates are off the calendar, but I find that unsatisfying - I want it really "fixed". Any ideas?
