Does anyone know any occasion where an iPhone user would want 3G *and* wifi
enabled at the same time? I've had mine since Jul 2009 and haven't found
one. It makes no sense to me that they are independent settings and not even
in the same section in Settings.

When AT&T first started to allow free use of their hot spots, it was
necessary to have both to connect to the hotspot. I believe that has been
changed now.

I was under the belief that your text messages and phone calls will not go through wifi but through 3G network

I've have WiFi on, 3G on, and cell data on all the time.

I was turning 3G and cell data off when I was at home because then I use WiFi.

Then I got tired of having to do the settings switch when I leave the house.

If I don't have 3G on, then I'm using "Edge" if there's no WiFi.

Am I misunderstanding something here?

Not as far as I'm concerned. At home I have wifi on and 3G off; when out I
have 3G on and wifi off. I sometimes forget and have to go into Settings to
change *both* settings.

So you can talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time.

As things stand, it wastes battery power. It seems obvious (!) to me that
there should be a simple toggle: wifi or 3G, not both, or at least an option
to make it easier.

Even better would be to automatically switch off 3G when connected to wifi.

To each his own (I think the Great British equivalent is "horses for courses").

My 3G is always on, and my Wifi is *usually* on, and I never have battery problems.

When I'm in my car, the iPhone is in the TomTom car kit, charging, even if I'm not using the TomTom App.
At home, I spend a lot of time on the computer and if the battery is getting low (extremely rare), I just plug it in to the computer while I'm there. And at night, it plugs in overnight.

I think 3G automatically disables by default when connected to wifi. Note that the 3G symbol disappears when you get connected to wifi.

And I agree on the simple toggle for these functions... and easily accessible.
I think I use these toggles more than five times a day.

One thing that Apple has not made clear is when a user turns off 3G, does that limit both the cellular portion, voice and whatever else, and the Internet connection,

Or does that ONLY limit the Internet connection portion?

Otto,

How about when you are on a 3G call and want to check the web for something.

Mary,

Yes, when 3G is off you are on the Edge network, which is larger than the 3G network. I used to travel for work, often to farming areas, and most don't have 3G. Heck, there are many places in big cities that don't have WiFi. As I understand it, for Internet the default is to try WiFi first, and then a cellular connection next.

The reason most people turn off 3G is to conserve battery, and most of us are not constantly on the Internet with our iPhone.

I turn off 3G to conserve battery, and only turn it on when I am surfing a web page that is not optimized for a cell phone and the page is taking forever to load. None of this turn it off at home, and turn it on when leaving.

An even bigger waste of battery is when the phone is searching for cellular service, and since I used to travel out to remote farming areas, there are plenty with no cellular service. Sorry AT&T, Verizon does seem to have a low, single-digit percentage better coverage in those areas. And a double-digit percentage better coverage in Colorado & Wyoming, especially if you are on a pay as you go plan.

Other than on an airplane, why would you want to turn off WiFi? and that turns off both.

Why do you want to turn off WiFi?

You are using the 64 bit installer aren't you? I think it is named
iTunes64Setup.exe - the regular installer will not install correctly.

I think it may be intentional. I get the same thing on my Blackberry.
The Voice Dial won't accept "911" or "Police", or any voice-name

You could have dialed 911 in the time it took you to activate Voice Command. Better yet, pull over to the side of the road and park, then dial if it was that important.

I was thinking about getting the Air but noticed that it only had a flash
drive instead of a real hard drive. Does anyone know the benefits or
disadvantages of flash over a true hard drive?

Apple makes great products but the price and limited software prevents more
people from switching from Windows based systems. They could probably steal
most of the Windows business if they made the price comparable.

A Flash drive is more durable - if you drop a "real" hard drive onto a
hard surface (like a tile or wood floor, rock, etc), chances are it
will break. If you drop a flash drive onto the same surface, chances
are it will be fine.

Flash drives use less power - you will get more battery life assuming
the same size battery.

Flash drives are instant-on - if you "sleep" or "hibernate" a "real"
hard drive device it will take a few seconds at least to resume from
where you left off, whereas a flash drive based device will simply be
on when you hit the button (like your iPhone is simply on when you hit
its button).

The downsides, however, include speed, size and cost. Byte-for-byte,
flash drives are currently still slower, cost more, and because of
that come in smaller capacities. These are improving and have
improved to the point where they can be used for primary storage, but
you're not going to find a 500GB flash drive for anything remotely
resembling a reasonable price, if you can find one at all. My local
Best buy, for example, has two such drives from Intel in their parts
department. The largest is 160GB and costs more than a Western
Digital Caviar Black 1TB (arguably the best PC hard drive available
today).

Or... Apple could match pricing and provide the same poor software, and poorly designed (hardware, not esthetics) hardware. Yes, we pay a bit of a premium for Apple products, but they "just work." Apple stopped making beige boxes when Jobs came back.

Jeffery covered the advantages of the Flash Drive over a hard drive. Yes, it is a little more expensive, but it is still new technology and the price has not come down yet.

Yeah, the persistence of Stocks can be a little annoying, so do what I did. In the last window of apps, I created a folder called No Go, and put Stocks any of the other Apps you will never use, but can not delete in it.

Mine has Stocks, YouTube, Compass (really, why a separate app, this part of every other map app), Gallery and Game Center.

Then get over it. It is not about you, but what the majority or large number of customers will use.
