Maybe you got other devices synced with your computert besides your iPhone. Chances are, when the computer spots little descripancy among data, say a contact, like an extra " " (space) or any character, it'll create a new entry.
Happens to me all the time. Besides my iPhone, I have an O2 Windows mobile phone. Since freakin windows mobile does not let you save more than one mobile number in an entry, you have to create a new entry. That's just not good when you also sync more sensible devices like iPhone which let's you have multiple mobile numbers. Thing is windows mobiles gets synced with PC, PC gets synced with iPhone. Alas! two entries.

If you are using Mobile Me on your I phone, under General/Contacts,
delete the Mobile Me account. Then add it back and you will be asked if
you wish to delete existing information, select Yes!
