If you've had it on the charger this long, it's probably fully charged.
Have you installed iTunes yet? If so, then connect your phone to your
computer and let iTunes do its thing.

I suggest you charge it until the icon in the upper right shows its done. I
would think 4 hours is pretty close to being done.

As for iTunes, you might as well go ahead and use it. It has its problems,
but its really the gateway to iPhone functionality. I was initially
reluctant to install it as well, but all the options I learned about were
difficult, especially for a newbie.
