I bet I know what happened. The case you have is the previous model
(slick and hard shell) those were the clearance on B F. The new ones
are slightly ruberized and the Apple Store employee probably assumed
they were not compatible with the 3GS which isn't true, they are just
a previous version. You might have to exchange where it was purchased
at though.
