If you have a bit of technical skill, a passive reflector placed by a window will bring in the signal. You would have to fabricate two antennas that operate at 2.4 GHz - but it isn't as hard as you think. I do it out of tin foil, cardboard, and adhesive tape. Instant five bars in the living room, but my wife hates how it looks.

People in rural valleys used to use passive reflectors for TV and FM. They would get permission to put an antenna on top of the nearby mountain - put one antenna aimed at the distant TV / FM station, and point the other one aimed at their house, wire the two together, and presto - instant reception with no power required! This is the same principal only you are doing it for cell phone frequencies.
