Here is my understanding. Even while the data on your phone and SIM
card are erased the SIM card is still your personal connection to AT&T
or whoever depending on location. So my contacts won't be there, but
if you call with my SIM card it uses my minutes.

SIM cards are cheap and all you have to do is ask at an AT&T store for
one, so I would keep my SIM card just to protect my AT&T account.
