The reason you have seen several different ways is because there is no BEST way. Optimum choice varies from person to person.
For example, I now have the TomTom mapping App and the TomTom Car Kit. Which means whenever I'm in the car, the iPhone is mounted in the car kit and is being charged. Which means it's that much less likely to run down when I'm NOT in the car.
