What is inadvertent about it running apps in the background? That is what iOS 4 and mutli-tasking are all about.

The 3G only has 128Mb of RAM and multi-tasking needs more RAM than that. Downloading more than 50 emails (total, not per account) in Mail, can choke a 3GS with 256Mb of RAM, and that is with threading turned off.

I am of the opinion, that Apple either should have given a severe warning about the speed being reduced on the 3G and announced official method to return it to iPhone OS 3.x for those that want to try.

If they had not allowed the 3G to update, they would have been called controlling, and people would made a media event (spell that as circus) of it claiming that they were forcing users to buy a new iPhone.
