He had the phone from when he had an earlier contract with AT&T that had run
out. When his earlier contract ran out with his iphone, he cancelled his
cell service for almost a year. Then he needed his service again so he got
pay as you go and avoided the contract. The iphone was his already from
before. He did use his iphone as an itouch for a long time w/o cell
service.
