I can't really comment on Apple Mail, I'm a (looks furtively both ways...)
PC person. The terms "client" and "server" are pretty standard. In the
case of my Outlook account at work, the client is my PC where Outlook is
running. Mail is processed on our server which is accessed by the client.
Client rules run locally on my PC when Outlook is running. Server rules run
on the server whether my PC is on or not.

Badges are the circular images attached to an icon on your iPhone. If
attached to your email icon, it shows how many emails you have waiting, or
for example on the app store icon, how many updates you have pending. It
all depends on the app, but it's an indication of how many items are waiting
for your attention.
