And you don't *have* to buy any data plan for the iPad unless you need that
capability. You can use as a standalone or with just wi-fi.

AIUI you can buy the data-plan for iPad not just on a month-to-month basis
(i.e. no contract) but you can stop it & start it when you want -- but if
you do sign up & *don't* cancel it, it'll auto-renew until you say stop.
