Well, I rate this as urban legend,

until we know how he did it and someone else is able to duplicate it, because AT&T's stand has been they would not make pay as you go available for the iPhone. But then again, this is the first iPhone, to my understanding, that is available in the US without subsidy.

BTW, if your friend travels, tell him the US the coverage available to him in a pay as you go plan is severely limited. Like no coverage in WY and CO is very limited, even in greater metro Denver. I used to travel more and there were other areas.

I know, I had pay as you go on my old Treo 650 last year. I would seriously consider a unsubsidized iPhone 4, on a month to month plan, if it got "contract-like" coverage. They won't give a break on service on a unsubsidized phone.
