The Reader

I'm planning on selling my iPhone 3G and want to wipe out all my "stuff" but with the problems with 4.0 on the 3G I would like to keep 3.1.3 and not restore to 4.0.1 as a new phone.
Has anyone done this? Can it be done? If so how?
