Try this. Disconnect phone from computer. Reboot computer. Reboot phone. Reconnect phone to computer and see if it now recognizes the phone. If not, repeat the procedure a couple of times. If you haven't tried using different USB ports, give that a shot. If that doesn't work, schedule the 90 minute trip to the Apple Store.
