My feeling is that camera functionality is better located either in a smaller piece of hardware (scanning apps using the iPhone or iPod Touch), or in a larger, more table-stable piece of hardware (videoconferencing using a laptop or desktop).

If you choose to leave it sitting around unprotected, more the fool you. This applies quite well also to laptops and netbooks.
