With the current version of iTunes 9.x and IIRC with the previous
version 8.x I have found that I can simply copy the entire "iTunes"
folder replacing an iTunes folder on a different computer, as long as
the iTunes versions are the same on both computers. Make sure iTunes
is not running on either computer when you do this copying. When
iTunes is launched it spends a few minutes doing some updating and
then opens normally with all my music and playlists intact. This has
worked for me moving from a Mac running 10.4.x or 10.5.x to and from a
pc running Windows XP (service pack 3) as well as Mac to Mac.

If you are going from a Mac to a new Mac you may want to simply let
the new Mac import your entire user folder from your old Mac. The new
Mac will offer to do this the first time you boot it; ie when it is
brand new and you have not yet gone through the setup and registration
screens. This feature used to be called "Migration Assistant", maybe
it still is.
