No, the Touch is wi-fi only.
Where will he be using it?
What will he be doing with it?

You only need to be connected to surf or d/l stuff "over the air"; you can
play games, listen to music & other audio & watch videos you've d/l, read
books & stored information (including web pages you've saved using various
apps), make notes etc. when off-line.

If you get all the content directly from a computer, you don't even need
access to wi-fi, but wi-fi does make it more than a nice touchy-feely-iPod.
(part of what I got the Touch for was the touch-interface, I never was very
good with a click-wheel.)

Verizon Mifi box, vrs now iPhone with hotspot

My question is, will the speed be just as good using the iPhone as a Hotspot vrs using a MiFi Box.

I just got my Mifi box a few weeks ago, and its still returnable LOL

Yes, speed is same but keep in mind CDMA limitation is that you can NOT use
data and voice at same time so if you have devices tethered you can not get
calls OR if you get a call your data connection will drop - it is not sure
yet how this will work, I have had both experiences using Hot Spot feature
on my Android device...

How can anyone know how the new gear will perform before it's even on the
market?

It depends on two things: How good of a connection you get, and how much
data you're going to need. AT&T's data plan caps out at 2GB, unless you
were able to "grandfather" with the unlimited plan, which won't allow
tethering. Verizon's limit is 5GB.

Speed and connection may vary depending on where you are. Where we use our
Verizon MiFi in rural southern Indiana, my AT&T connection is total crap but
the Verizon connection is fantastic. My husband's work-provided phone is
Verizon, and so far we haven't found anywhere in Indiana where he doesn't
get a far faster connection than my AT&T iPhone. But I've heard people in
other states say the opposite, so YMMV.

I already have wifi hotspot capability on my Palm Pre Plus, on Verizon. It works great -- and it's free, up to 5 Gb per month. I use it fairly frequently with my ipod touch when I'm on the road and need to check something.

What I don't understand - why on earth would I want to create a wifi hotspot? I see this commercial where someone sits down, creates a hotspot, and everybody around them starts using it. I have a hard enough time keeping spammers, pedophiles, pornographers, phishers, keyboard loggers, trojan horses, and other scum out of my affairs as it is without giving them wifi access through my phone. Wouldn't they also be bandwidth vampires running up my data usage and costing me additional fees?

What am I missing here?

I am sure it can be password protected.

But i would use it with my iPad or laptop.

You password protect it and I know many full time rvers who use hotspots to connect at least two computers to the internet. I'm sure there are others who use all five connections.

You would have the option of password protecting your hotspot so you could, for instance, use it with your wifi laptop but no one else could use it.

I don't know why the commercials show a bunch of random people in the park using it. Makes no sense to me.

Last night my power went out (fortunately only for about 10 minutes).

If I had Wifi hotspot capability, I could have activated it and continued online with my laptop, even though the DSL modem and the Airport wireless router were dead.

Supposedly, as I have been following the Pimlical listserv, CSED is not
going to develop for the iphone because he can't have direct access to the in

try :-(

I'm looking to upgrade my brother IOS from 3.1 to 4.2. My question?how has everyone experience with 4.2 been? Is it better than what went on with 4.0? When does 4.3 come out? Should I do 4.2 before 4.3?

A couple of hundred stations do have dedicated iPhone apps, it is wonderful to have a "one tap" icon on the screen and get a distant station when I am driving. Radio networks such as Clear Channel have applications that let you select the city and station, but of course those are unworkable while you are driving.

If the station has no online presence at all, you are out of luck - but - the iPhone is rumored to already have an FM chip embedded. We can hope that IOS 4.3 will activate it. The last I heard, Apple was holding back until they could find a way for the user to tag a song and buy it in iTunes. But I hope they abandon that and just let us use the radio.

you know, for your peace of mind, test it!

set the alarm for 5 minutes from now and then silence the phone. if it goes off then you can feel confident about the result!

You don't have to change your plan but watch it closely after you upgrade.
I recently upgraded from a 3G with unlimited plan to an iPhone 4 and they
automatically changed the data plan to the new 2GB capped plan. The guys at
the AT&T store said they entered the info correctly but it just got
changed. They also said they've seen it happen multiple times. You can
have your original plan but you might have to spend some time talking to
AT&T to get it right.

I just upgraded my 18 month old 3Gs to an iPhone 4 and kept the unlimited plan with no problem. That being said, I think AT&T is more than a little bit unhappy with my data usage. They sent me a cute little mailer with a note saying that my current plan was an appropriate one for me, but noting the amount of my data usage with a note to "watch it"
