That's not a "runaround" that's just an answer you don't like!
If you don't keep your "grandfathered" plan, you have to go with what they
are *currently* offering. It's not a new or unusual practice. (I used to
have an old cell-phone plan that the customer service people didn't even
*recognize* it was so old! I think my mother still has one even older than
that.)

If/when tethering is important to you, I recommend going to AT&T's website, logging in to your account, and checking what your data usage has been for the past [however many] months.
If you find that, for example, you have never used more than 1 GB of data, then go ahead and tether.
If you find that you regularly use 2 GB or more, find another way.

That's incorrect , currently with the unlimited data plan you don't have an option to tether , they want you to drop the unlimited data plan and signed you up with the newer plans like the $25 for 2GB and additional data plan for tethering . BUT if you get rid of your unlimited plan they will not be able to put it back on when you come back (:

Ok,
I was just asking to see if there was. I know having the unlimited data plan is like gold right now. Wasn't sure if there was a golden goose like that before everything changed.

As far as I know they didn't offer it before but some may have had it on like 3.1 but it was blocked with firmware updates.
I saw it on the radio!

My grandson has a MacBok Pro, and has an iPhone through AT&T. He needed tethering and couldn't justify AT&T's high prices/limited resources and went to Sprint and got a tether dongle with unlimited data for $40.00/month.
Best of both worlds... now he has 3g on his MBP via Sprint's network for just over a buck-thirty a day!

I will never switch back to Verizon as I was unable to get a signal in my home. Also the network speed is not as fast as AT&T.

My iPhone 3GS will be ready to update in July or August. The majority of people I know are on Verizon. Those that aren't... have the iPhone.
For southern Indiana, I expect many people will switch. At least at this early stage in the game.

Now that Tuesdayâs Verizon iPhone announcement is all but assured, what
will the impact be on current AT&T iPhone customers?
With the latest rumors indicating that Verizonâs version of the iPhone
will be available in late January, we know that plenty of Mashable
readers will be contemplating making the move to a carrier with â" letâs
just say â" fewer connectivity issues.
Of course, the wireless companies never make this easy. As Mashableâs
Ben Parr pointed out yesterday, the Verizon iPhone might not spell
immediate disaster for AT&T, if only because of the high early
termination fees.
AT&T charges an ETF of $325 for smartphone owners who enter into
two-year service agreements. However, AT&T reduces the amount of the
ETF $10 for every month a customer is in their agreement. That means
that if an AT&T customer signed a new two-year agreement in June 2010
(for the iPhone 4), it may be possible to shave $60 off that $325
figure if he or she cancels the account in February.
Of course, for AT&T customers who are at their breaking point with the
carrierâs notoriously shoddy coverage, the price â" any price â" might be
worth leaving the fold for possibly greener pastures.
At CES 2011, AT&T proved once again that it cannot manage a large load
of smartphone-using, data-munching customers congregated in one area.
To be fair, Verizonâs data connections were also slow, but at least
most of those phones could make and receive phone calls.
Last fall, we polled Mashable readers on their interest in a Verizon
iPhone. The results were clear â" 58% of respondents said they were
interested in an iPhone on the nationâs largest carrier.
In that poll, the majority of âyesâ respondents were current Verizon
customers. This time, weâd like to poll existing iPhone owners (though
non-iPhone owners can feel free to vote as well). Are you going to
switch carriers to get a Verizon iPhone?

Maybe it will be self-correcting? If enough people leave AT&T then it
should help the network congestion problems. I don't have many issues
with AT&T in the St. Louis area but understand it is highly regional.

Oh and with CDMA can you take a call and surf at the same time? I seem to recall that CDMA did not support simultaneous phone/data.

I am going to wait until my contract is up in Sept. By then I can
determine if all the switchers to Verizon permits AT&T network to improve. If it
does not, I will move if unlimited data is still available for new iphone
subscriptions at Verizon. I am not totally discouraged with AT&T at this
point so I am looking forward to some improvement when the subcribers even
out the strain on both networks. Also I want to see what the iphone 5 is
going to be. No need to rush into an iphone 4.

Switch to Verizon? [POLL] via Mashable! by Christina Warren on 1/10/11
Now that Tuesdayâs Verizon iPhone announcement is all but assured, what
will the impact be on current AT&T iPhone customers?

Technically no - most people don't notice though as the times they are using
phone and talking at the same time they are on WiFi. I have a VZW Droid in
addition to my AT&T iPhone and nearly all of my voice calls are done on it
and I think twice I have tried to pull up a web page and realized it
wouldn't load. However, the rumor is that Verizon is going to use data for
calls on the iPhone so that it won't be an issue. We will know all tomorrow
at 11am and the Apple earnings call is the following Tue 11/18 ;-).

Ditto with Sue F, almost word for word. I have a 3GS with no significant problems, currently being used in SW Oklahoma. My original 3GS contract is up in June.

Our family has been with AT&T, Cingular, Houston Cellular since 1998! They have always had great service here in Houston and surrounding areas. Very few dropped calls on iPhone. We know the weak areas, so we either stay away, or get-off the phone before we get there, or drop the call when we're there.
I wouldn't buy Verizon with your money!

One of the main reasons I am staying with AT&T is roll over minutes. I am surprised no one else offers that (that I know of, at least).

Since I jumped *from* VZ (after 15 years) to get the iPhone, my renewal
won't come up for quite a while. By then I'll have heard plenty about how
VZ's version, service, speed, etc. is going.
I don't spend much time (hardly any) in the DC Metro tunnels so I don't
*need* to have VZ while I'm commuting or something. (currently, though
"they're working on this") VZ (& maybe Sprint in some way? not sure) is the
only cell provider that works all over the Metro system.
I haven't had any trouble with access or whatnot with my iPhone4, though I
don't put heavy demands on it so I'm not a good "test case". I certainly
haven't tried to talk & surf at the same time; I considered it "advanced"
the other night when I was talking & needed to look up a contact# for the
person I was talking to -- I warned him I might hang up accidentally, but
all went well after all.

iPhone 3GS $49.00

Timing is everything.
Last week I bought 2 iPhone 3GS. $199 each.
Then the next day they are advertised for $49
I was going to take them back within my 'return timeframe". Then get them back at sale price.
But I went to the store today
They were sold out. Did not know when more coming.
So they put credit on my cell bill for the difference for each one.
Thanks
Bill
