That is a good review for Tom Tom. Even if I don't know Lower Waker Drive.

I used to hate flying into Minneapolis, because the car rental garage is on like the second floor of a 5 story parking structure. I would be all the way out the the highway intersection that I need to make a choice at before the GPS would get a satellite fix. That is why you can't rely strictly on GPS. And I couldn't get a fix, circling the airport, because the sky is obstructed.

If I hadn't changed 2 time zones on the flight in, it usually acquires the satellites faster.

But consumes data like anything.
Unless you are on unlimited data plan, try to be conservative with its usage.

Inrix has a great maps / traffic application. Beat the Traffic is another one, I think written by KHOU Houston but it works in other cities, I've tested it in Los Angeles and Dallas, doesn't skip a beat and even links traffic cameras. Mapquest is also a free program, as is Google Earth. I've got a folder with all of them sometimes one traffic application will pick up a wreck the others don't have yet. Amazing for free apps!

Here is my experience with Apple's Maps, and is similar with other apps that do not install the maps on the phone.

I was driving up the Pacific Coast and found several areas where I was in a cut through a hill with stone on either side, or in the bottom of a valley. I had no cell signal, but I did have a clear view of the sky, or at least enough to continue GPS reception.

What I saw on the screen was a dot for my location and a pin for the next POI on top of a grey grid for a map. The app lost cell reception and so it could not get the portion of the map I needed. Being that I was on a windy road in the hills, I could not see the next turn on the map that I needed to take.

I was also running my Garmin nuvi 360 along side the iPhone and the map and my location were both shown.

The canyons of any big city may play havoc with cell or GPS reception.

I used to travel for work to "wide spots in the road" and farmer's fields where there was no cell reception, so for me, I prefer an app that loads the maps to the phones, because in those situations, I usually have good GPS reception. Either way it is nice to have a paper map at hand at least for an overview. You can usually pick up a one-page overview map at a convenience store and if you are staying with friends leave it with them or give it to a stranger at the airport.

Is your friend from Chicago and what app was he using?

You can save a lot of data by choosing "Map" instead of "Satellite" for the display. "Satellite" is pretty, and useful in many situations, but takes a _lot_ of downloaded pixels.

I have used Tom Tom for many years, first on a Palm Treo and now on iPhone. I like and trust it. I also use MotionXGPS, which is a great gps app. It will allow you to cache maps when you have WIFI and use them when you don't have cell or WIFI coverage.

Also, whether using the cell system to download maps continuously or just using the GPS receiver continuously runs your battery down FAST. You will need some sort of a connection to the cars auxiliary power for anything more than a pretty short trip.

I like both apps as well but I find myself using TomTom lately even more because of it's Traffic feature. It is very accurate and warns me ahead of time about a slowdown and proposes an alternate route.

No other mapping/NAV app does this quite as nice as TomTom does.

No, what you purchase from the Mac App Store is for your computer. What you purchase from the "old" App Store through iTunes is for your iPod, iPhone and/ or iPad, not your Mac.

Does it keep track of which tasks aren't finished and moved them to the next day so you don't lose track of them?

Can you schedule items that repeat on odd patterns, e.g. every three days, or the 3rd Wednesday of each month? These are things I really miss from my Palm Treo that iCal just can't do on the iPhone.

Thanks! Pastor Diane

Yes Pastor Diane - there are custom repeats. The undone tasks are moved forward. Also there are levels that can be given to each task - low to top priority. When a task is overdue a red notifier appears on the app icon. Also the tasks can be synced to Toodledo and from there can be shown on google calendar.
As a replacement for Datebk6 it is capable. Too bad CESD Didn't work on datebook for iPhone. He does have one for Android :-(

5 Things We Expect to See With The Verizon iPhone

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Mon Jan 10, 2011 11:32 am (PST)

Who will be ordering tomorrow (if everyone is correct)?

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: 5 Things We Expect to
See With The Verizon iPhone via iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into your
MyPhone by Jacob Lopez on 1/10/11

The rumors have been circulating for what feels like years now. You
know the story, and we've all heard it. Verizon will be getting the
iPhone. From mid-2010 and all through the rest of the year it seemed
like at least once a week we would hear one more story that "all but
confirms" the Verizon iPhone.

Now, one day before the press event at which everyone is expecting to
finally see the Verizon iPhone announced, it's almost impossible not to
be 100 percent positive when saying,"Verizon is going to be announcing
the iPhone tomorrow."

The Wall Street Journal helped validate our speculation, as they tend
to be on target with their Apple leaks. We also learned that several
prominent Apple bloggers, such as Techcrunch's MG Siegler were invited
to the event. Gizmodo, on the other hand, who says they have a great
relationship with Verizon PR was not invited to the event. They can
only guess it has something to do with last year's iPhone 4 scoop.

Verizon's COO, Lowell McAdam, will be heading the event, but Apple CEO
Steve Jobs is expected to make an appearance. We also learned recently
that Verizon is posting official PR/company Tweets using Twitter for
iPhone. That's not very subtle. Unless some employee at Verizon is
using a phone sold by a competitor, we don't think it's a coincidence.

This is no doubt a huge event for Verizon, and they may be making some
additional announcements pertaining to the device. Let's take a look at
what we expect to see with the Verizon iPhone.

1) Unlimited Data Plan

This report comes from none other than the Wall Street Journal. Verizon
is pretty confident that they can handle the data loads that will come
with the new iPhone users (they'll know for sure soon). However, WSJ
does note that it's unknown how long Verizon will support this type of
network, as the company itself has said that the industry needs to move
towards some kind of tiered pricing plan. Still, this would be an
important move for the company as it would bring additional users in,
especially those who are sick of AT&T's monthly data limit.

2) Don't Expect Major Changes to the Handset

In other words, don't expect an iPhone 5. We are sure Apple will save
that announcement for one of their own special press events. Aside from
the internals, which will work on CDMA-powered networks (like Verizon)
we recently saw a video that shows that some of the device's internal
components have changed. This may be normal, as many electronics
manufacturers change small components within devices for cutting costs
and improving the manufacturing process. However, what's most
noticeable from the video was the new antenna, which wraps around the
outer edge of the device. In the video showing the updated iPhone, the
infamous gaps are placed differently. As shown in the image below:

So who knows how real the video is? Apple ordered it to be pulled down,
so it definitely upset them.

3) A Boost in iPhone Sales as Droid Slows

Creepy Droid Eye is Angry

The iPhone is a big seller, no question about it. Before commenting
negatively on this, keep in mind that we aren't talking so much about
marketshare right now as we are how many iPhones will sell on Verizon
when the device is introduced. Several new users will jump to Verizon,
or want to give the popular iPhone a try (we are sure that there are
many Verizon subscribers just waiting for the iPhone to jump to their
carrier), and the handsets will see a huge boost while they are
introduced. Buyers who were looking for a smartphone and thought about
getting a Droid may now go iPhone instead.

4) AT&T Will Lose a Lot of iPhone Fans as Verizon Gains Them

AT&T is not popular amongst many iPhone users. Data usage limits,
confusing billing plans, unreliable networks. It's definitely upsetting
their customers. We are sure that many of those customers are just
waiting for the iPhone to be available on a carrier like Verizon, so
that they can jump ship on AT&T and use the other network. For one,
they are tired of their unreliable connection. Second, it's a big
middle-finger to the company they struggled with for the last four
years. Even now, one of the most popular search terms we find leading
to our blog is Verizon iPhone, so it's definitely something people are
looking for information on. It's bound to happen.

5) AT&T Network Will Improve

There's no way to know this for sure, but we can take a guess. First,
AT&T will have to work extra hard to convince you that the iPhone is
better on their network than it is on Verizon. Whether it's through
marketing or investing in better network infrastructure, they want to
keep their subscribers.

There is also the fact that they will likely to be losing iPhone-toting
subscribers to Verizon, effectively lightening their load. Meanwhile,
Verizon will be getting a whole bunch of new iPhone users. iPhone users
who love to download Apps and songs, browse the internet and listen to
Pandora or video Skype with friends over 3G. It can definitely put a
strain on any network. If anything, it will be a great way to test a
network's capability.

What Do You Want to See Tomorrow?

At this point, the Verizon CDMA iPhone is pretty much as real as it
gets without having Steve Jobs or Lowell McAdam come out and say it
(which they will kindly do tomorrow). We're all ready to hear the news
as well as know when the Verizon iPhone release date is set. We have
seen guesses and speculation as to what we will see tomorrow.

What do you expect, or what do you want to see from tomorrow's
announcement? Unlimited data? A new iPhone antenna? Something totally
unrelated to the iPhone as blogs all over the internet slap their
foreheads in disbelief? Let us know in the comments!

I called AT&T and they will not help me to unlock my IPhone! Big surprise! How do I unlock my phone and will it effect my apple warrantee?

The is a company there called 2 Degrees that offers a prepaid SIM card that will allow me to use their 3G network to make calls and get email, etc. Can I just put it into my iPhone replacing the AT&T SIM card or do I need to "unlock" it which I don't want to do!

Tethering

Hi all,

I am getting the run around with AT&T. I want to tether my MacBook with my iPhone3G while I travel for two weeks in Colorado. I currently have the unlimited data package with AT&T. I called and they said that I would have to drop that datapackage and add the Tethering option instead! That doesnt' make sense.

Does anyone here have some experiences on this that they could share.

Many Thanks

Steve

I think that information is correct. They won't offer you tethering if you have the unlimited plan. So I recommend you not lose the unlimited plan and instead find a way to use your mac using free wifi places like hotels, Panera Bread, McD's etc.

That is what AT&T has said since the announcement of the new data plans.

What you describe is the only option you can take with AT&T.

Correct, AT&T no longer offers the Unlimited Data Plan and to get tethering
you have to give it up, pay the $25 for 2GB and an additional $20 for the
ability to tether so you end up paying $45/mo for 2GB (total) instead of
$30/mo for unlimited. That is the key reason I won't give up my AT&T iPhone
as I would not be able to get my unlimited data plan back - luckily my
Verizon Droid Incredible also has unlimited data and has a 3G Hot Spot built
in....

Let me ask a question. What if you had tethering before the data change? When they were offering unlimited data plans. Is there a difference in the tehtering option then and now?

Documents To Go

Greetings,
I need an app that will allow me to sinc and use Numbers. This app was recommended earlier but now several reviews complain that it's freezing up and generally not working well since the recent iPhone updates. Is anyone using it now and have the bugs been worked out??
Thanks,
Joel

It used to be a good app. However, since they were sold there seems to be no
activity to fix bugs or bring it up to date. I have been using Google docs.
It handles spreadsheets and word docs.

iPhone Users: Will You Switch to Verizon? [POLL]

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: iPhone Users: Will You
Switch to Verizon? [POLL] via Mashable! by Christina Warren on 1/10/11

Now that Tuesday's Verizon iPhone announcement is all but assured, what
will the impact be on current AT&T iPhone customers?

With the latest rumors indicating that Verizon's version of the iPhone
will be available in late January, we know that plenty of Mashable
readers will be contemplating making the move to a carrier with — let's
just say — fewer connectivity issues.

Of course, the wireless companies never make this easy. As Mashable's
Ben Parr pointed out yesterday, the Verizon iPhone might not spell
immediate disaster for AT&T, if only because of the high early
termination fees.

AT&T charges an ETF of $325 for smartphone owners who enter into
two-year service agreements. However, AT&T reduces the amount of the
ETF $10 for every month a customer is in their agreement. That means
that if an AT&T customer signed a new two-year agreement in June 2010
(for the iPhone 4), it may be possible to shave $60 off that $325
figure if he or she cancels the account in February.

Of course, for AT&T customers who are at their breaking point with the
carrier's notoriously shoddy coverage, the price — any price — might be
worth leaving the fold for possibly greener pastures.

At CES 2011, AT&T proved once again that it cannot manage a large load
of smartphone-using, data-munching customers congregated in one area.
To be fair, Verizon's data connections were also slow, but at least
most of those phones could make and receive phone calls.

Last fall, we polled Mashable readers on their interest in a Verizon
iPhone. The results were clear — 58% of respondents said they were
interested in an iPhone on the nation's largest carrier.

In that poll, the majority of "yes" respondents were current Verizon
customers. This time, we'd like to poll existing iPhone owners (though
non-iPhone owners can feel free to vote as well). Are you going to
switch carriers to get a Verizon iPhone?
