Re: VZW iPhone Press Release

Currently, if you 'pay' for the feature it is $20 on top of your data plan
($29.99) so if you have data + 3g hot spot it is $49.99/mo. The hot spot
feature can be turned on/off as needed and the data plan is required if you
have a 'smart' phone. AT&T's tethering plus data plan is $45 but has a 2GB
cap where Verizon's is 5GB.

Personally, I have the unlimited data plan on VZW Droid and grandfathered in
on AT&T iPhone 4. I have used the hot spot feature occasionally on VZW
(turned it on for a couple days here and there) and it was always pro-rated
at about 70 cents per day.

My thoughts exactly. I think changing carriers would be the same as
changing lanes at the super market. It's almost always a losing
proposition. Should make an improvement on ATT when the bandwidth frees
up.

hear, hear to the "lighten the load" thoughts. I'm happy with AT&T. My hubby has a Blackberry with Verizon and can't make or receive any calls at our house.

I also switched to AT&T because of no Verizon signal in my home. And now in my basement office I get a full AT&T signal.

Here's where the Verizon iPhone falls short

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Keep in mind that the iPhone 5 will be out in June and will likely be
on ALL carriers - I think Apple is just giving verizon a nice 6
month 'lead' in selling the iPhone 4 before releasing a single model /
all carrier iPhone 5

Verizon iPhone falls short via BGR | Boy Genius Report by Zach Epstein

Allow us to bring you up to speed in case you missed it — Verizon
Wireless just announced that it will finally begin carrying the iPhone
4 starting on February 10th. It's kind of a big deal. There are
definitely plenty of positives tied to the Verizon iPhone, of course.
For starters, choice is always a good thing and the fact that AT&T
finally lost iPhone exclusivity will benefit consumers in a big way.
And there are plenty more benefits as well — for example, there's a
redesigned antenna that might reduce the affects of the death grip, and
a mobile hotspot option that AT&T iPhone users have been wishing for
since Android first popularized the feature. But it's not all double
rainbows and jazz hands, we're afraid. There are definitely some areas
where Verizon's upcoming iPhone 4 is sorely lacking, and we've listed a
few of the main missteps after the break.

Slooooooooow
This was covered in our feature yesterday entitled Why I'm not
switching to the Verizon iPhone: Need for speed. Verizon's 3G network,
while sturdier than the Great Wall of China, is slower than your great
grandmother driving a Cadillac on the highway. Ok, it's really not that
slow and it's more than quick enough to handle basic functions like Web
browsing, email and use of basic apps. But this is 2011 and data speeds
should be increasing, not decreasing. If heavier usage is your cup of
tea — streaming media, data-gulping apps and so on — Verizon's 3G
service crawls.

Those who jump ship from AT&T could be in for a rude awakening in this
department. Then again, they also might finally be able to make phone
calls.

No simultaneous voice and data
There was an off chance that Verizon Wireless would finally announce a
solution for simultaneous voice and data over its CDMA network, but it
didn't happen. We'll just have to wait for the LTE-enabled version of
the iPhone to drop in 2012. In the meantime, if you want to talk and
receive emails on your iPhone 4 at the same time, you'll need AT&T.
After all, where would we be without young professionals traipsing
through our city streets with their faces buried in smartphones while
they bark at their Bluetooth headsets?

Roam or get off the pot
Roamers may have a tough time finding ways to travel internationally
with their Verizon iPhones. Well, they can travel anywhere they want
with their iPhones as long as they don't need to talk or use cellular
data. Verizon's iPhone 4 will only operate on CDMA networks and the
rest of the world, for the most part, uses GSM. There are some
countries where Verizon iPhone users will be able to roam on CDMA, but
service won't be great in many cases — and prepare to sell some organs
a month later when your bill arrives.

To be fair, however, AT&T iPhone users may have to cough up the deeds
to their houses as well if they roam internationally. It's not cheap.
Less expensive options used to be just a jailbreak, an unlock and a
prepaid local SIM away, but the iPhone 4 complicates matters thanks to
its Micro-SIM. Average users definitely won't be hacking up foreign a
SIM card to perform a Micro-SIM-ectomy, so international roamers are
basically screwed in either camp.

No 4G
Verizon's entire presence at CES last week was focused on one thing and
one thing alone: 4G. Its LTE network is now live in 38 markets and a
flurry of 4G phones will launch in the coming months. But the iPhone…
the smartphone millions of Verizon Wireless subscribers have been dying
for… is a 3G device.

We knew Verizon's iPhone 4 would be a CDMA phone for a number of
reasons, but 3G is so 2010. Sprint launched its first 4G phone with
minimal WiMAX coverage and it ended up being the fastest-selling phone
in the carrier's history. Now, we won't see a 4G iPhone from Verizon
until 2012. That means while millions of Android phones are surfing
Verizon's 4G airwaves later this year, iPhones will still be puttering
along at EVDO speeds.

Post updated to remove a reference to FaceTime over 3G, which will not
be available on Verizon's iPhone 4.

20 Questions About The Verizon iPhone Answered

Posted by: "Bill Boulware" bill.boulware@gmail.com   boulware0224

Tue Jan 11, 2011 11:56 am (PST)

http://feeds.ismashphone.com/~r/typepad/1209935315s4903/ismasher/~3/bPRSVj6I7IM/everything-we-know-about-the-verizon-iphone-so-far.html

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: 20 Questions About The
Verizon iPhone Answered via iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into your
MyPhone by Jacob Lopez on 1/11/11

Today was Verizon's big announcement. We already knew what to expect,
but the Verizon iPhone does have a few new features. Nothing major, but
it's worth reading up on it if you are interested in picking up an
iPhone from Verizon. There are a lot of things you should know if you
are considering the switch.

The conference was very short. It ran for about 20 minutes and was
followed by a little Q&A. We gathered all the info presented at the
conference, did additional research and read reader questions. All of
that has been put together and summarized into question and answer form
below.

Hit the jump to read up:

1) When does the Verizon iPhone become available?

February 10th, 2011.

2) Okay, can I preorder it?

Verizon iPhone preorders begin February 3rd for existing customers. The
wording wasn't exactly clear, but from the sounds of it, everyone else
will have to wait until the release date (Feb. 10) to pick it up. Check
Verizon and Apple to sign up for an email notification when it becomes
available.

3) Where will the Verizon iPhone be sold?

According to Dan Dee of Verizon, "on February 10th, everyone will be
able to order online, in stores or in Apple Stores.

4) How about pricing?

Pricing will remain the same for Verizon, that is $199 for the 16GB
model and $299 for the 32GB model. With a standard, 2-year contract.

5) What's the cost of the iPhone without the 2-year agreement?

One reader, (Thanks, Balistyx!) pointed to the Verizon FAQs: "When
purchasing iPhone at the 2 year promotional price a new agreement is
required. However, you will also have the option to purchase iPhone at
full retail price, which will not require you to sign a long-term
agreement." That means $599 for the 16GB and $699 for the 32GB.

6) And the plans?

No pricing for the Verizon iPhone plans. We can only guess that it will
be much like Verizon's current plans.

7) Will the iPhone 4 be getting LTE?

No confirmation on that. However, Tim Cook of Apple did say that the
iPhone 4 is not LTE because it would have compromised battery life, and
that's not something they were willing to do.

8) No unlimited data plan?

They didn't announce anything of the sort, but here is a chart with
their current data plans:

Link (keep in mind that "Unlimited" doesn't always mean unlimited. AT&T
used to cap at 2GB before making an official announcement)

9) Will Verizon be able to handle the extra data loads?

They say they are ready, but there's no way to tell for sure. They can
say what they want right now, but let's wait until we see a few million
data-hungry iPhone users on their network.

10) How About a Contract?

That's going to be your standard 2-year agreement.

In the photo above, you can see that the little metal strips that make
up the CDMA-compatible antenna are symmetrical on this handset.

11) Is anything changed?

Nothing major that we can see. The antenna was made CDMA-compatible (no
LTE, sorry), so it has a slight tweak. It looks a bit like those leaked
videos that Apple ordered to be pulled down. One wouldn't notice it at
first glance, but the little gaps in the wrap-around antenna are
different.

12) What Version of iOS does the Verizon iPhone come with?

The demo units at the Verizon event are loaded with iOS 4.2.5

13) Does the Verizon iPhone come with any junk pre-installed?

No bloatware or extra junk on this one. It's iOS, pure and simple.

14) Will we be able to be on the phone and browse the internet like on
AT&T?

Nope. No voice call and internet at the same time on the Verizon
iPhone. That's CDMA for you.

15) How about when the iPhone 5 (Or maybe the iPhone 4G? Heck, whatever
they decide to call the next iPhone.) is announced this summer, will
Verizon get that too?

A variation of that question was asked at the special event. Someone
asked about the yearly iPhone product refresh and how that would work
with Verizon. They declined to comment. Unfortunately, we probably
won't know until that time comes.

16) Any additional cool features?

The Verizon iPhone can be used as a mobile hotspot for up to five
devices. It's available on an App that's pre-loaded onto the phone.
Some sites ask whether this functionality will make it to current
iPhone models in a future firmware update (as mentioned above, the
Verizon iPhones that were demoed ran iOS 4.2.5.

17) What if I purchase now and the iPhone 5 is released in June?

The good thing about the iPhone is that it retains a lot of value. We
would guess that you could get over $550 for sure. Remember, people are
always willing to shell out a bit more if it means getting the handset
without being tied to a contract.

18) How about the white iPhone?

There has been no mention. It was on Verizon's site when we checked,
but it may be removed. Besides, that would have given Verizon some
MAJOR bragging rights that they would have been wise to go with.

19) Which is the better iPhone? AT&T or Verizon?

This will probably depend a lot on the reception in your area; however,
we are also interested in seeing how things go for Verizon when the
iPhone is in fullswing.

20) Is the Verizon-Apple deal an exclusive deal?

Apple's Tim Cook says that its' a multi-year non-exclusive deal. This
means that the CDMA iPhone may reach other carriers. A Sprint iPhone?
It's possible, but will it happen?

That's all for now

We will be reading around for more details throughout the day. We
aren't expecting anything major, but will keep you informed if anything
develops. Stay tuned.

The New Verizon Offering

Does anyone know if the iPhone being offered by Verizon exactly and
precisely identical to the iPhone sold in the Apple Stores. Can an
iPhone bought in an Apple Store be usable with Verizon. In the ads I
have been hearing the hype comes across as Verizon version of iPhone,
so I would be worried about full Apple version functionality. Apple
designs all the internals of their devices to work together without
separate drivers and the like. So before I leap I want to look
carefully. Thanks for any help.

Um, have you read everything posted? Apple is releasing a NEW iPhone that
will work on Verizon 2/10/10 - it will not be in stores until then.

What is it exactly that you want the iPhone to do that would a deal breaker for you?

From what I've read it is the same as the AT&T iPhone except it is CDMA instead of GSM and it can work as a hot spot because of iOD 4.2.5.

But it is still the iPhone4, not an iPhone5 so don't anybody get excited
about *that*.

The hot spot ability is what would be nice for me

If is an additional dollar amount, then an airfare or some other prepaid device is that same for me

Thx

Bill

Sent from my AT&T wireless device!

Let's clarify for him.
Some basics.
Verizon uses CDMA technology.
AT&T uses GSM technology.
So your AT&T phone cannot work on Verizon.
The new Verizon phone is basically the same phone as the AT&T iPhone 4 but modified to work on CDMA and a few very minor tweaks...
Otherwise they look identical.

Hope this helps. So Apple Store will sell two versions (one for AT&T, and the other for Verizon)

Another really good alternative is QuickOffice Connect. I have them both,
and I would say I use QO more than I use DTG.
