The Reader

I have the 3GS iPhone with the current OS. I have downloaded a variety of free ringtones from http://audiko.net/ to my iTunes account (v. 9.02). But in order to sync them to my phone, it warns me that all media will be erased form the phone to add them. What is up with that? I know I can reload my music, video, etc., but this doesn't seem like a logical way to do things. Am I missing a step or something? Or is this Apple's way of saying 'hey - buy from iTunres, or ELSE'?
