Re: [apple-iphone] iPhone much better

HI All - Would like to share my experience with upgrading a 3GS. As the
group already knows I have been having freezing problems and turning the
iphone into a brick when I try to upgrade through a Vista computer. Last
Tuesday I traveled to the Apple store to get the upgrade the easy way!!! It
took two tries but it upgraded in 20 minutes.

However when I came home I foolishly did the restore from backup (wish I
had seen Bill's suggestion about restore as a new phone). The restore went
well but the syncing kept stalling at any app that had a database or that I
paid for. Frustrated I downloaded the apps I had purchased directly onto
the iphone. All my data which was restored was there for apps like splashID
and HanDbase (whew). Over the course of 3 days, I had progressively synced
the iphone with apps except for one - Audubon wildflowers- which seems to
be having a problem as it is not available at present in the app store. I
deleted that app and the phone synced and after two episodes of freezing
during the syncing of my music, the phone was synced and fine.

I used the phone and then tried to sync again and it got hungup on the
first backup. I deleted the backup and was expecting another 2 - 3 hour FRESH
backup but to my amazement the backup only took 1-2 minutes from scratch
(amazing) and the phone completed its sync without a freeze. I got down on
my knees and prayed to the apple gods!!!.

I have since synced repeatedly with NO problems, the backup takes a
fraction of what it did before os4.

The only issue I have had since was lack of push notifications which I
corrected with a reboot, and checking each application -- a couple had the push
notifications turn off.

In retrospect I probably should have done a restore as a new phone as
stressed by Bill. And also should have deauthorized and reauthorized the
computer. The error message I received after the final sync with the one app
(audubon) that would hang was -- Unable to sync as the signature was not
valid.

However after 4 days of repeated syncs and reboots and downloads I am a
very pleased os4 user. The sync with itunes is much improved on my computer
-- backups are FAST and there have been no freezes since the initial first
sync after restore. Highly recommend the upgrade for 3GS phones - the
folders are nice but take a little getting used to.

Hope this helps others with problematic Vista issues.

Sue

Glad to hear it - I know Apple wants to make things 'easy' for everyone and
tell them to Upgrade and restore there backup and everything will be
exactly
like it was before but that really is the worst way to handle a new OS
and/or new device - it should all be installed fresh, sure it takes a
little
more work setting back up accounts, syncing data, etc but 20-30 minutes vs
having problem after problem doesn't seem so bad.
