you can still use everything that does not require internet access. However, if you have wifi or at a location that has wifi, you can do everything - including phone calls if you have skype service.

I have the first generation Iphone that is no longer activated. I still use it for everything when my 3gs phone is charging. I even make phone calls since I have skype and have wifi at home.
