What are you plugging the other end into?

Sometimes if you close a laptop it kills power to the USB socket.

And as previously pointed out, sometimes you don't get a firm connection at the 30-pin connector. Reconnecting usually fixes that. I have only had one flimsy retractable 3rd party cable fail in the 10 or so cables I own.
