The tracks are usually collected according to a common characteristic, such
as popularity, genre, source or subject matter. "

Basically it is a "best of" album, like "Best of the 80s" where you have say
12-15 tracks from different artists that have already appeared on other
albums but are compiled on a new album - typically if you just add them to
iTunes and let it sort / albumize them they will be sorted by the artist
then album & not be on a single compiled album so you have to manually
override iTunes to tell it that those tracks are a compilation album &
should be sorted as such.
