Just to be clear: no matter how many times you press the globe icon at the
bottom of the kb (immediately left of 'espace', the localisation remains
French and other ones you have enabled in Settings never appear?

You might have chosen multiple keyboards in the settings.
So a button on the left side of the spacebar appears (with a globe symbol). You might have accidentally pressed that button which toggles the keyboard language.

I experienced the same when I chose multiple keyboard languages (English, German, and Spanish) too.

What I did was I went to Settings > General > Keyboard > International Keyboards.

There you'll see all the keyboards you activated. You can deactivate them and leave only English there by tapping on Edit, then eliminating all other keyboards you do not need.

I hope this helps.

Not if you're using Excel as it's intended to be used, to crunch numbers.

As a way to keep track of things, most definitely. Download the app
from the AppStore, it's free, and play around with it. The desktop
companion can be used for a month's free trial so you can give it a
thorough workout before deciding if you want to pay for the desktop
part.

And as an added bonus, I've found that the guy who seems to be in
charge at Ilium and handles most of the support to be very responsive.

Backup (before downloading iOS 4) taking forEVER, then it didn't Bac

Last night I was trying to download the new iOS 4.1 on my 3GS iPhone, so
I decided to do a Backup 1st. After highlighting my phone, I clicked
"Sync" on the front page/tab.

Normally, I highlight my phone, go to, say, "apps", and click
the update on THAT tab". That's how I normally get my backup (I
think???).

Anyway, iTunes kept saying it was backing up, the phone said it was
syncing, and the barber pole was moving. I finally left it do that and
went to bed.

This morning I woke up and it was STILL saying it was backing up. I
tried to "eject" my phone and it still kept hanging, acting the same way
I left it.

I finally did the slide-across-the-phone to stop the "sync". Thankfully
I didn't lose anything, but I don't think it took the backup. (I forgot
to check iTunes to see if it recorded a backup.)

Obviously, tonight I'll try to do a back up again by doing the same
thing; perhaps it was a fluke.

1. Is it true I should do a backup BEFORE downloading a new iOS or
does it automatically do a backup before it downloads a new iOS,
therefore I don't need to do the "sync" thing on the front
page?
2. Does anyone know what causes this backup locking thing?
3. Any suggestions on what I should do?
4. I was doing this backup before I downloaded iOS 4.1, so is the iOS
4.1 a problem?

It will backup as part of the OS upgrade process. So you will be fine if you just do the upgrade.

My backups used to take forever with os 3 on my 3GS. After 4.0 they quickened. Not sure what os you currently have on your phone. If you are using a windows computer try disabling Internet connection and turning off your firewall and antivirus programs. I had a lot of issues with freezing and locking up of my computer until I did that. Be sure you are NOT connected to the Internet while those programs are off. The other thing you can do if your second try doesn't work is to try moving your old backup to a safe place and syncing again to get a totally fresh backup in case a file in the backup was corrupted as has happened to me also.

If you are using a Mac I can't help you.
Backups after 4.0.1 and now 4.1 are very fast or should be for you.

I will try your suggestions tonight. Thanks very much!

I upgraded two 3GS's and both gave me an option whether to back up or not. I did not backup for both and am very sorry because my friend's 3GS was restored to factory settings without all contents after an error occurred during the process.

My dad's 3G did not give me that option and automatically did the backup which took forever. )=

Backups and syncs are superfast after the 4.1. Jeeze, it's nice to be in the 21st century!

When you compose mail, press and hold the the From: column for a
second and a list if all your email accounts appear as a drop down
menu. You can select the email of your choice to send MSG and the mail
is sent from the selected id. This works on my iphone3G and hopefully
it will work on iPhone 4 too.

It works perfectly on the iPhone 4. However it isn't necessary to hold down the "from" button. A touch is all it takes.

Try entering them (username, password) again. Microsoft and also Yahoo! intentionally does that "for security reasons".

Or

Maybe you forgot "@hotmail.com".

Or

If you are accessing from iPhone, it sometimes does that too. I experienced that before but will just be okay in a couple of minutes.

If it is permanent and none of the above solves the problem (hopefully not), maybe your account got hijacked/hacked )=

Hi Elisa - I hope those suggestions work for you. also if you haven't
done a hard shutdown of your phone to clear the memory that might help also.
Just hold the home and power button for 10-15 seconds until the apple logo
appears. It will clear a lot of internal settings but none of your
personal settings (none had been changed when I have done this a number of
times.). It clears the memory and helps things run faster.

freezing and locking up of my computer until I did that. Be sure you are
NOT connected to the Internet while those programs are off. The other
thing you can do if your second try doesn't work is to try moving your
old backup to a safe place and syncing again to get a totally fresh
backup in case a file in the backup was corrupted as has happened to me
also.

The new cords (the ones without the lock) are so brittle. They crack in a few months use. I have 3 cracked cables, all exactly on the same places - right next to the connectors. My oldest cable which was for my first iPod is still okay albeit yellowish dirty. The design of the new cords and probably the materials used are just not as good as the previous ones.

Yes that has been my problem as well. They are brittle. And there should be a strain relief at the connectors to ensure they don't break.

I tried going to the Apple support page that Bill suggested, but I couldn't figure out the details of it all.  Sometimes it's nice to just be able to pick up the phone and call... even if you have to sit through the robot voice and push buttons to get where you need to go.

I guess I'll just wait until I make a road trip to Indy.

I went through all the steps (THANK YOU, BILL), but it's asking for $19.00 to cover the part.

That is what I mentioned, they put a $19 hold on your card - if you do NOT
return the broken one with the included return packaging, you will be
charged the $19, if you do return it within the time period (14 days I
think), the hold drops off. As long as you are under warranty (1 year
unless you purchased AppleCare).

If no one answered this yet, uncheck photo syncing, sync, recheck it and
sync back and it will 'optimize' and fix them.

Any rumor of changes to the iPhone 4?

I'm considering purchasing the iPhone 4 soon and was wondering if there was going to be an updated phone put out to solve the antenna problem without adding a bump case. I always seem to buy Apple products right before they update the whole line! Any ideas?

They aren't changing the design - issued a statement a week or two ago that
they are discontinuing the case program as of 9/30 as the problem "was not
as widespread as we originally thought", so if you want the free case you
HAVE to buy before 9/30. If you buy after 9/30 you can call Apple Support,
complain and end up getting a free Apple Bumper but they are not going to
release a new phone until next June/July...
