Yeah, well I had already downloaded the file. So that wasn't it. The wait was while it backed up the iPhone.

> It turns out it wasn't really stalled. More like watching glaciers move. I left it alone and it took 6 hours to upgrade. Does anyone else think this is excessive?! What can take 6 hours???

Among other things, downloading a several-hundred megabyte file when the servers are busy....

If you don't use Google Voice then you likely have no need for it, but for
those of us who do it provides a direct interface to all GVoice services
without having to navigate a scaled down mobile web interface.

I am also trying to figure out if it makes sense to start using Google Voice. I've had a number back when it was the previous start up company. I just never found a reason to try it out.

So Much to Learn!

I don't have an iPhone yet. It is funny that I bought an iPod Touch first generation immediately after they first came out. There weren't even cases available for them yet. I was definitely one of the first people to buy an iPod Touch. Yet, for whatever reason, I wasn't interested in an iPhone until now. I will be getting my iPhone in October, so I am trying to learn about its features by reading your questions and comments.

It is hard to comprehend certain things if you can not visualize them. Maybe because I never owned an iPhone before, some of the things I read here sound strange to me. But I am sure that once I have that phone in my hand, it will be an easier hands-on experience. I love gadgets, so now I am dying to get my new phone and start learning along with all of you iPhone pros. :)

The iPhone is very easy to use. I don't think you will have any problem. I
would suggest that you go to the nearest Apple store and get them to demo
the iPhone for you. If you can't get to an Apple store, search YouTube for
"Apple iPhone 4". There are many videos that would be a lot of help to
someone just getting started.

What bluetooth do you have? I have the Jawbone Icon and I am unable to do so,
but wondered if I wasn't doing something correctly. Anybody know if this update
helped the Icon have this feature?

4.1 has a lot of bug fixes and features not in 4.0.x - all phones and
touches should be updated to it.

No - it has to support A2DP (Stereo Profile) - Most newer headsets support
it, older and/or cheaper ones only support the "Handsfree" (phone) profile,
look for one that supports at least both Handsfree and A2DP (Stereo sound
along with Play/Pause), if not AVRCP (FF/Rewind/Skip/Back controls) as well.

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: More international
iPhone launches coming [Update: More Info] via 9 to 5 Mac by Mark
Gurman on 9/19/10

Today we reported that Apple has officially announced a September 25th
launch date for the iPhone 4 in China. Now, 9to5mac has learned that
Apple has some more international iPhone 4 launches up it its sleeve.
We’ve heard that the iPhone 4 should be launching in both Israel and
Malaysia next weekend and presumably a few other countries. Exact info
on the Israeli side of things is scarce but we’ve managed to get some
more precise info out of Malaysia.

The iPhone 4 and the 8 GB iPhone 3GS are said to be launching in
Malaysia this upcoming Thursday, September 23rd on both Maxis and DiGi
as the carriers. That’s what we know for now and we’ll be sure to
update when we learn more.

Update: We’ve just gotten some new info… Israel will be getting the
iPhone 4 on September 24th on Orange, The Philippines will get the
iPhone 4 on September 26th for Globe Telecoms, and Turkey will be
getting the iPhone 4 on Turkcell & Vodafone Turkey on September 24th.

USB/Charging Cord problems

Posted by: "jiminmanjr" jiminmanjr@yahoo.com   jiminmanjr

Mon Sep 20, 2010 8:26 am (PDT)

Shortly after I bought my iPhone 3GS in July 2009, I had to get a new phone due to battery issues. I **think** I kept my original cords, but I'm not 100% sure.

Regardless, since that time my USB/charger cord has had some twisting issues. At both ends, it's like a kinked vacuum power cord - the outer rubber material has slowly twisted and torn. About two months ago, it had gone down almost two inches on the phone jack end, and an inch or so on the USB end.

I've used electrical tape to cover it, but that doesn't seem to be the best option. I now have to set the plugged in phone down at a certain angle in order to charge. If I am holding it up (while lying in bed), I lose the charge signal, or it goes in-and-out.

Has anyone else had this trouble with their charger cords? I could go buy a new one, but just didn't want to spend the money if I didn't have to... but maybe others have had this happen.

Thanks!

The power cord doesn't have strain relief at the ends as it should. I have had 4 or 5 of these break over the years.
I just take it to the Apple Store and they give me a free exchange for a new one! I recommend you do the same.

I had to replace my charging cord after about a year of use. Mine twisted
(involuntarily) as well. I think because I used to pack up my cord every day
to take with me, plug it in at work, cart it home, use it in my car etc. Now I
have a device in every location so I don't move my cords from place to place any
longer and hope that it lasts longer.

Now I am an iPod user, I have the old "classic 160G" iPod and I have noticed
that the charging cord for that device is made of a much thicker material and
I've never had to replace it. I think the combination of never moving it and
its thicker width has contributed to its longevity.

What is Game Center

Last night I downloaded the 10.1 system (I think that's the latest), and left my phone plugged in to the computer overnight. When I got on the phone this morning, there is an app for "Game Center" on the main screen - not pushed to the third screen like new apps typically do.

What is it? Am I missing something? I checked out the app, and it looks like mostly paid games that I don't need.

Thanks!

That's what it is. It's an app if you are a gamer. It allows you to compete against others around the world and see how your scores compare against them.

I don't think you can delete the app, but you can move it out of your mains. Perhaps hide it in a folder of unwanted stuff.

Facebook notifications

It seems that for the past month or two I've had some weird instances with Facebook on my iPhone 3GS.

I will go into the app, look around, and then close it... and have 33, or 45, or 58 notifications. I'll open the app again, and I'll have a notification on being tagged in a picture, or a new post or something, but not the quantity that I see on the home screen.

Also, on the Main Menu of the page (Inbox, Photos, Check-In, etc)., I will sometimes have the same notification showing up for two or three days - even when others have come in after that. I don't know how to clear it up... but it's just a minor thing.

Anyone else having this happen?

Are you sure you have the latest facebook app? Be sure to download the latest version.

Also, I recommend you reboot your iPhone, and also exit out of facebook and then re-login.

I have done all the updates (as of two hours ago), so I would assume I have the latest.

I have also done the hard reboot, power off-and-on and logged in-and-out.  Tried all the obvious stuff.  It's not a regular thing, but still happens 1-3x a day.

Are you sure you have the latest facebook app? Be sure to download the latest version.

Also, I recommend you reboot your iPhone, and also exit out of facebook and then re-login.

Bill you're an absolute gem! Thanks again for helping me ( for the umpteenth time ). What would this group be without you? I have finally got ALL my old data in my new, the phantasmagorical iPhone 4. Thanks again!
