4.1 has a lot of bug fixes and features not in 4.0.x - all phones and
touches should be updated to it.

4.1 has solved my battery problem on the 3gs. I vote for it. No problems.

I had no problems with my 2 3GS phones. Update went fine, no hiccups.
The one thing I do is set it to download only. I know some folks had issues if

Does anyone have any idea about how to delete old backups please? I am desperate to this so that I may restore my new phone to the latest backups from the old one.

It is not populating the iTunes Server Farm very quickly - it seems that the
server(s) half of the reviewers are on have it but it hasn't propogated
throughout the US yet - the link is

until it makes it to the server your account is on, it will say it

Does this app show your phone number when calling people or is it a totally different number?
Is there a monthly fee for calls in the US from the US?

Shows your Google Voice Number (When you sign up you get your own unique
Google Voice Number)
One thing. When making a call with GV Mobile you enter number and hit call.
Your Iphone then rings and when you answer your call goes through.
No charge for Calls within the US And International calls are dirt cheap.

Part of the confusion with this app is that you are supposed to have everyone call your Google voice number but if you call them, they will see your iPhone number.
Is that the case with using this app too?

What if you go on international travel with your iPhone? You still depend on a cellular carrier to receive the call. This isnt like skype where you can turn on airplane mode and make calls via wifi.

Both calls and texts within the USA at least are free. I've been using GV since it first came out and never been charged a dime except by my carrier AT&T for data access. The last is a flat fee and included with no additional charge.
As far as what number is displayed, I've always believed that the GV number is displayed (and captured if necessary) on the phone of persons I call. I'd be happy to try an experiment, so if anyone wants to give me their number I'll call and we can see for ourselves.

US & Canada are free...I've been using it since the summer...and so far...no fees.
I don't use it for text much because of its web based...its slower...
I use textfree for this......but I digress... :)

Actually, you can select in your Google Voice Settings whether your number
is displayed or your GVoice # is displayed and as far as the outgoing
calls/ringing back, Google has changed a few things since they opened GV up
to everyone - each # you call is now assigned a permanent # so that when you
call it from any of the phones set up on your GVoice account it goes
straight through so the system doesn't have to call you first then relay the
call anymore.
It is important to note that GVoice is NOT VoIP though - you are still using
your cell phones voice minutes to place the call or receive incoming calls,
UNLESS you have Gvoice set to display your GVoice # for all incoming calls
and have that number programmed as one of your "Unlimited" #s, if you are on
a plan that gives you the 5 numbers for unlimited calling.

Google Voice is great. I had the GV for the iphone before it was pulled from the app store.
Having Google Voice keeps me in touch with my friends and family with free sms when I travel outside the country. And I use GV for fwd my calls to Magic Jack which I bring with me whenever I travel.
So my number never change, and I bring with me everywhere.
When I heard about GV for the iphone is coming back, with new and improved, I was all over it.
I found out about this app from this community, so Thanks.

Joan, As long as you are in the US, I am not sure what the problem is -
GVoice has been open to the public for a few months now - all you need is a
Google Account (technically, you can register any e-mail account as a Google
account, However, it might be easiest to sign up for a G-Mail account).
I would go to gmail.com and if you don't already have an account, click on
Create an Account - (First name, Last Name, login name, password, security
question, recovery e-mail, location (United States), DOB, and a word
verification). Once you have registered that and/OR logged in if you
already have a G-Mail account, then open a new tab and go to
voice.google.com - sign in with your Google or Gmail account and you can
create a Google voice account, opt to select a number in any of the US area
codes and even enter letters and/or numbers to find a partial 'vanity'
number if you like.

Why do they need your DOB?
And do they "check it" against anything else you've put down anywhere?
As long as you're older than <some particular age for specific reasons, e.g.
13 or 17 or 21 or for "adult content"> why do they care -- and what are they
doing with the information? (other than, of course, targeting their
ads...maybe I'd better not use kids' dates after all!)

Bill,
I tried again and still no google phone numbers in three different zipcodes that I tried, so I just put in the vanity phrase and got a number. Thanks for help. Now I can start the learning curve on utilizing this feature.

Google Voice Apps

The App Store now has both GV Mobile+ and GV Connect at $2.99 each for those of you who use Google Voice. The apps load much quicker than the old web app, and they appear to have more features. I'm still exploring them, more reports later.
You'll recall that Apple at first rejected the Google Voice app, claiming it "duplicated" iPhone features. Apple apparently has relented on this claim and now there's a complete app for using the service.
One of the nice features of GV is that you can set it up so a call to your GV cell number will also ring on your home phone. Text messages are also free. In addition, going to GV using your desktop, you can send texts or initiate calls from them, then if you're at home your home phone will ring to connect you to whoever you've just called. This requires a WiFi or AT&Ts web connection, but I've found that on my WiFi the calls are as clear as my regular VOIP service from Cox. If you want to use this feature when you're out and about, say at the nearest S*Bucks, just use the iPhone or set the settings to choose your iPhone as the "ring back" number.
But, the service still does not apparently have the capability to send text messages to multiple addressees without doing them one-by-one. And, still no MMS service. You can't send anyone a picture via text.
It's not clear what the difference is between Google Connect and Google Voice. Both permit calls and texts, but beyond that the only difference seems to be the addition of Emoticons to GConnect.

The NY Times has had an iPhone app for over a year, and finally the LA Times has one, too. $1.99 at the App Store.

Sfera App Review

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Sfera App Review via
iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into your MyPhone by Jacob Lopez on
9/19/10
Many of us carry around our iPhone everywhere we go. Thanks to the
phone's built-in camera, it's pretty much replaced the need to carry
around a basic point-and-shoot. With the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4
the photo quality has become good enough to take acceptable pictures.
Was is it?
Sfera takes photography on your iPhone one step further by giving you
the ability to capture 360 degree panoramic shots on your 3GS and
iPhone 4. Sorry, 3G owners, no love here.
The panoramas can be taken in two ways: You can stand in one place and
capture the environment around you, or you can walk around an object
(for example a statue) and create a 3D view of the object. In addition,
the App can capture 20 seconds of audio to make the panorama feel
more "alive." Though the audio didn't seem to add much for us. It just
made the file larger, but the option can easily be turned off.
Our Test Drive:
We tested out a few different shots. The App instructs you to move
clockwise. Just to see the result, we also tried some counter-clockwise
panoramas and most seemed to appear jumpy. In other words, follow the
App's instructions.
Perhaps the best thing about capturing a panorama with this Sfera is
the ease of use. You tap the screen to begin shooting. Upon tapping,
you will see a thin white line running horizontally across the iPhone's
screen. Over the line, you will see a small white dot. As you turn, you
must make sure to keep the dot centered on the line. This keeps the
panorama level, and keeps it from having those obvious "seams" or rips
between two captured images.
We also tried having a friend walk in front of the camera while
shooting the panorama. They showed up fairly clearly, and didn't seem
to ruin the shot. However, circumstances may be different if you have a
bigger crowd of people, cars passing, etc, while trying to record your
image.
The 3D image capturing also works well. It seems a bit more "jumpy"
than a 360 degree view, but the overall quality is great.
The App is actually fun to use. It takes longer than a regular picture,
but we have to say that we genuinely had fun taking panoramic shots of
different rooms and objects throughout the house. It may be fun for
vacationers. (Note: The App's page notes that those wanting the App for
professional use, such as real estate should contact the developer).
The Good:
Sfera is very easy to use and the panoramas look great. It's some of
the most fun we've had taking pictures in a long time, even if just for
novelty use. It's a neat way to capture cool pictures while on
vacation, and may be just another way to use your iPhone for fun shots.
The Bad:
In this version the content can only be shared with users who download
the free viewer. It's fun for sharing with other friends who own an
iPhone, but you won't be able to email the image to a friend to check
out on their home computer. Sadly, this is a HUGE blow to the App's
usefulness, because one of the best parts of taking photos or video is
sharing it with others. Also, we felt kind of ridiculous standing
outside with our iPhone up while spinning in a slow circle.
The Case of the Great App with a Fatal Flaw:
The App is currently on sale for $1.99. At that price, we say it makes
a nice novelty item. But our biggest complaint is that the user can't
share them with anyone unless they have the Sfera viewer (Free on the
App Store). This means that anyone we want to send a panorama to MUST
have an iPhone with the App. Still, it very seriously hurts the
application's potential. We understand the reasoning: Real estate
agents and other professionals can use it to make serious money. Still,
it shouldn't be an issue. Imagine how many eager real estate agents
with iPhones would be more than willing to fork over the two bucks for
an App that lets them create virtual tours with their iPhone.
3 stars (OK, but needs improvement)

I have the sfera. Interesting. Will use it when I get to a scenic place.

Re: Mail -- Serious Omissions in Program

In response to point #4, you might consider getting one of the apps such as GoodReader for your iphone that will allow you to sync documents such as pdf, xls and doc from within iTunes, dragging and dropping into the section below the apps.
Sending them via email is also an alternative and by merely double tapping the document in your email, a view window is displayed on your iphone and in the right hand corner you will see an option to 'open in' and you can select one of the apps you have installed on your iphone such as GoodReader or others to view the documents as well.
Also double tapping a photo or link will bring up the copy selection tool faster than pressing on the link or photo in the email or a URL link in top bar of Safari.
Hope these tips help you.
