[apple-iphone] Printing on iOS 4.2
Have to say, as usual Apple took their time but implemented it correctly.
Printing from iOS 4.2 (Beta) could not be easier. I can't wait to try
"Airplay" from iPad (and eventually iPhone) on new Apple TV when it comes
out.
I have not been able to install the latest beta on my iPhone 4 - it gets
most of the way done and times out with an "error (10)" that there seems to
be no fix for yet but if it is anything like iPad OS 4.2, will be a great
update. Lots of little improvements (different fonts, sizes and styles for
Notebooks, etc), Airplay, Airprint, etc.
For printing you need to have beta access to iOS 4.2 Beta and OS X 10.6.5
(Apple went as far as to let iOS developers have it even if they are not
registered/paying OS X developers). Any "shared" printer on any Mac (and
eventually with a Bonjour / MobileMe driver, Windows as well) - you simply
hit "Print" and it pulls up a list of printers with sharing enabled set up
on Macs (and soon Windows machines) on the WiFi network, select the one you
want, tap + (or -) if you want multiple copies and hit print and before you
can walk to the printer, it is already going. There are going to be several
WiFi (mainly HP and some Cannon) printers that will allow you to print
directly without having to have a Machine on with the printer shared
(according to the 'instructions') but most of us are not going to buy a new
printer just for that feature, having it use any shared printer on any WiFi
network is great. No pairing bluetooth or transferring documents, etc -
have used at home and office and is much easier than having to e-mail
something to myself, go to a computer, open it, print it, etc.
