Ok, you have 2 issues. Why is it not using WiFi? And why is it trying to use MediaNet to connect to the internet.

Since you have had the iphone for 1.5 years, I assume you have done something to it recently. What have you done to your phone recently to make it possibly make it change its settings? Did you upgrade to iOS 4?

Have you used WiFi before? Do you have the WiFi turned on? You have to chose which network to connect to. You may also have to enter a password to connect to your network. (It is encrypted and password protected, right?)

You can force the phone to connect by WiFi, by putting it into Airplane mode and then turning on WiFi. This is done by going into Settings. Turn on Airplane mode. This will also turn off WiFi, so you have to turn WiFi back on. Then open Safari and go to a web page.

You may be connecting to MediaNet as a Bookmark in Safari. If so, I would delete that bookmark, since you don't need it.

Don't forget to turn off Airport mode, and to make sure WiFi is still on.

If you updated to iOS 4, that maybe the issue. You just need to correct the upgrade.

If this does not correct it, I would stop into a AT&T store and have them check out your settings and the SIM.
