Re: [apple-iphone] Going to Germany
I was in Italy a couple of months ago and purchased ATT's international (European) plan for $5.99/month. This allows you to make phone calls to the US for $0.99 per minute and the texting is $0.50 per outgoing text. Incoming texts are free to you. There is no roaming charges with this plan. It was very useful to me. Of course, for email, I used the hotel's wifi

First, I would make sure Data Roaming is turned off, and I would find out what Cellular Data is. Both of these settings are here: Settings > General > Network.
I understand that the AT&T international cellular plans are outrageously expensive, especially just to check a restaurant reservation or call a cab. They used to allow you to unlock the phone if you showed them that you were traveling abroad. I don't know if they do this any more, but I would sure ask. You may have to show them an itinerary. Then if you plan on using the phone a lot, get a local SIM card in the countries you visit. Buying one or two of those and throwing them away later, has to be cheaper that coming home to a several hundred dollar bill. In the UK they call them Top Off cards, but if you explain you want to buy a local SIM card and pay as you go, they will understand.
If they say they won't unlock the iPhone, get __written__ instructions on how not to rack up a huge bill while you are away. That way if it is wrong, you have evidence that the info came from AT&T.
Enjoy your trip. Have a beer and squeeze a bier hall girl for me!
