Depends, every one makes different compromises.

I found the cassette adapters & transmitters gave lousy sound or crosstalk. I use an adapter from Periphial, I think it was called iPod2Car. Someone else picked 'em up.

Plugs in between the factory wiring & your stereo. Some of the stereo controls will work the iPod/ iPhone, varies by model. Will not do hands free calling. Connects w a 30-pin connector so the sound qualify is as good as you stereo and charges the device. 'bout a $100. That and a good dash mount and you've got your tunes & gps just where you want it.
