But call the friend first, as AppleCare is transferable if the previous owner bought it.
Since the 3GS came out about this time last year I would call and find out today.
For the Window people on the list. AppleCare on Apple computers is extends the warranty and tech support for two additional years. For the iPhone, iPod and iPad it extends it only one additional year.
