You're correct with #1
Hold down the home & power keys together until the unit turns itself off (don't use the slider when it appears).
After it turns itself completely off - push the power key (on top) & grab a cup of coffee while it reboots itself .
I did it twice in a row & it seems to have made my 3G the same as it was before the upgrade. Of course, compared to my iP4, the 3G is downright pokey.....
