[apple-iphone] trip question

I have an unusual question here. I know that some of you fly a lot, so
maybe you can help. I am taking a domestic US trip via plane next week, and
rather than checking my lugage I have purchased a small suit case. In order
to not have to carry my mac book so that I have something to sync my iphone
to and to keep up on group emails, I have to resort to a slightly larger
case than is specifically allowed (so that the Mac will fit in the
Suitcase). The airlines will allow a bag as carry on that is 22x14x9
inches... or 45 inches overall. the bag that I would like to take is
21x15x11. So my question is, Do they check the sizes of carryon bags if
they are that close? I know what the rule is, but again my question is do
they check the size of carryon bags if they look close in size to the max?
thanks for your help in advance.
