the upgrade to OS 4.0 was problematic for me too with the 3G.
the update to 4.01 (8A306) this week has the phone back up to speed and working smoothly. not sure why, but it is smooth again.

be sure you turn it off and back on before doing the upgrade.
doing a back up is always a good idea too.
