I have seen them become unresponsive if the contacts get bent inward, or if
to much pressure is applied and that bends them.
That and corrosion are the 2 reason I have seen. But I don't do a whole lot.
I am sure he wasn't trying to mis lead you but rather just make it sound
like a super technical job he did. LOL
The end result is a happy customer and that is what matters.

Interesting. Stranger things have happened. Perhaps he was not
a "Genius". Or had something to hide about the button electronics.
Whatever he changed immediately fixed the Home button problem without
recurrence.
