For the record, think I fixed it.

1. do not connect your iPhone
2. Find your mobile application folder copy it--just in case--and then
empty the original.
3. Open iTunes and delete all the applications. Ignore the warnings
that iTunes will also remove the apps from your iPhone on the next sync.
4. Plug up the iPhone and let iTunes sync the apps back to the
iTunes/mobile apps folder.
