You can sync to multiple accounts. It won't wipe anything, but
honestly, it's more hassle than it's worth. You have to log out of one
account and into the other based on which account has the app to
update them if you don't do it on device. I got tired of it way back
when and we just consolidated under my account, which meant
repurchasing a few apps my wife had under her account.

Using the same iTunes account doesn't mean they have the same content.
His and her device are treated uniquely and can have their own
installed apps, music, videos, playlists etc.

Maybe there is a particular reason he wants a different account, but I
haven't had any reasons myself which justified continuing with more
than one. In fact, we have two iPhones, one touch, and four nanos all
under the same iTunes account. They each have their own content.
