Thanks for the replies.  I have called AT&T and they're suggesting the International Roaming, which would be $5.99/month + .99/each min. each call!  I'd have to tack on $25/mo. for 20 mb of internet data or an additional $119 for 200 mb of data. I then asked her how much it will cost me to get out of my contract, which I will do. :(  

If I'm reading correctly, I will be able to buy an iPhone in Germany and go with T-Mobile?  I wonder if it's worth also having a cheap phone to change sim cards in as I travel?

I'll be tapping into the expat community also, but I cannot go to Germany without an iPhone! (G)
