I could easily be a question of the car you're doing this with. I have two rather technically advanced cars, in terms of gadgets, and one of them will not upload my address book and the other does so automatically. In both cases it has to do with the way they treat the iPhone (or don't). The one that won't automatically upload my iPhone address book, will upload contacts from other manufacturers automatically.
