OK, try this. With iPhoto closed, go to Home* > Library > Preferences and
drag com.apple.iPhoto.plist out to the Desktop. Plug in the iPhone. If
iPhoto does not start up automatically, start it manually. Is it seeing the
iPhone now? If yes, trash the plist file on the Desktop; if not, close
iPhoto and reinstate the plist file (this contains your iPhoto preferences).

*Home is your top-level folder, the one with the house icon.
