An app that may help international travelers is Text plus. If you are on free wifi you can text without cost through their server. I tried it on my trip to Canada and had not been charged by AT&T when I texted through text plus. HTH

Keep in mind that if you choose to send any SMS or MMS messages, you are likely to get charged for them, WIFI or no WIFI.
I live in Canada and did what Bill suggested on a recent trip to New York. I only used WIFI and turned off my cell radio by being in airplane mode. I used messaging but was charged for the messages when I got back to Vancouver. The fee was small, but I still did get charged for them.
One more thing: I read these posts regularly and thank goodness we don't rely on AT & T in Canada. Our cell service here is excellent, no matter which carrier you are on.
