Here is an update. I hooked up the iPhone to the Win 7 laptop with Apple
cable and it recognized the phone needed to be recovered. No USB errors.
Tried to restore but iTunes and the laptop froze half way through. Did a
reboot, reconnect of the iPhone and the restore went without a hitch.
Restored the backup and synched without a problem. Needless to say, my
faith in the system has been shaken some, although now I know the backup
process works. Even my camera roll was restored to what it was.
Luckily, the backup I did immediately before the system crash was OK so
I lost nothing but time.
